Obituary

Kingsford: Mildred F. B. McGregor passed away at her long time Hamilton Avenue home in Kingsford, Michigan on Monday, September 5, 2005. She was one hundred one years and ten months of age. Only two days earlier the family had celebrated the Christening of her youngest great-grandchild. She was born November 8, 1903 in Appleton, Wisconsin, daughter of the late Julius and Kathryn (Meunier) Barrett. Mildred was the only surviving sibling of nine children. Her father died six months before her birth. Her family was of modest means and she went to work at a very young age. Through her ambition and talent, she became the major source of the family's earnings before she was fifteen years old. Before it was popular to refer to "women's lib", she was one of the original independent women. Mildred was active as a clothing buyer for several Appleton area clothing specialty stores. She took the train regularly to New York City to buy women's apparel. She moved to Iron Mountain after marrying Clark C. McGregor, founder of McGregor Brothers Insurance Agency, on July 27, 1935. Mrs. McGregor was one of the founders of Chapter AN of the PEO Sisterhood in Iron Mountain in 1937 as well as Chapter CX. She was also a founder of Bon Voyage Travel Agency in 1963. She belonged to the Trinity United Methodist Church along with her late husband. She was a member of the Women's Society of Christian Service of which she served as president for several terms. In addition, she was a persuasive advocate for acquiring the new elevator at the church. She was a member of the Chippewa Club, founding member of the Iron Mountain-Kingsford Women's Club and The Order of Eastern Star. Her hobbies included knitting, oil painting and reading. She was a skilled cook whose favorite creations were pasties and chocolate cake. She favored fine automobiles, preferably washed and well polished. She enjoyed spending summers at her cottage at Spread Eagle and ocean cruises. Mildred was a tenacious cancer survivor for over ten years. Over the last five years, she was blessed by the presence and help of loving caregivers, allowing her to continue to live at her own home. She is survived by a son, Barrett C. (Marcia) McGregor of Spread Eagle, Wisconsin; her granddaughters Laura Lynn (David) Hansen of Stevens Point, Wisconsin and Jennifer Margaret (John) Breidenbach of Grayslake, Illinois; her grandson Anderson Barrett (Holly) McGregor of New York City; and five great grandchildren: Jana Kathryn and Tyler Rand Hansen; Graham Silas, Chase McGregor and Harper Anderson Breidenbach.
