Obituary

Michael Arthur Thompson, 54, of Lafayette, Indiana, passed away Monday, July 19, 2010 at his home. Michael was born on November 25, 1955 in Norway, Michigan; son of Michael Byrne Thompson and Judith Ann (Tutas) Thompson. From an early age, Mike took an interest in tools and machines. He enjoyed 4-wheelers, motorcycles and snowmobiles and would race them against anyone who dared. He was an undefeated moto-cross champion for three years and a state finalist in snowmobile racing. Mike also enjoyed sports and was a feared offensive lineman for the Kingsford Flivvers being honored as High School Second Team All State Center. He loved his Green Bay Packers and enjoyed the freedom to collect guns and hunt the Northwoods. He was a life member of the NRA. At age 15, Mike started his career as a motorcycle mechanic at P&C Harley Davidson and at age 16 began working for Iron Mountain Sport Center as a mechanic and was later promoted to service manager. Mike later moved on to a position as a marine service technician for Lakeshore, Inc. Most of his time spent there was installing and repairing deck machinery on board navy ships in New Orleans and other port cities. Mike then became a service manager for the marine division of Lake Shore. He left Lake Shore after 17 years of service to become Service Manger for Schultz Equipment, Iron Mountain. In 2007, Mike left Schultz to become a service manager for Wiers International Truck in Kalamazoo, Michigan and Lafayette, Indiana where he remained until his death. On February 14, 2003 Mike was married to Judy L. Stephens in Billings Montana. Mike and Judy enjoyed exploring the countryside together and have been active members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints where Michael was a High Priest. In addition to his strong faith, Mike was an active member of his community. He was a past member of the Jaycees International, Iron Mountain-Kingsford Masonic Lodge, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Dickinson Area Hockey Association board member, and also a Red Cross volunteer. Mike loved life and especially cherished his beloved wife and his son Nick. Surviving with his wife are his mother, Judith Thompson; his father and step-mother, Michael B. and Joyce Thompson; two sons, Nicholas Wallace Thompson of Iron Mountain Michigan and Jonathan (Coletta) Goss, of Rhinelander, Wisconsin; two daughters, Amy Bussey and Cassandra Bussey, both of Casper, Wyoming; two sisters, Lisa (David) Celello and Marcia Thompson, all of Iron Mountain, Michigan; and brother Jim (Sandy) Burrows of Greenville, Wisconsin. Also surviving are his nieces and nephews: Ashley (Drew) Thomas, Joseph Celello, Miranda Celello, Brooke Thompson, David Burrows, and Lindsey Burrows. He was preceded in death by one brother, Lawrence Wallace Thompson in 2008. Visitation will be Saturday, July 31, 2010, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron Mountain. Funeral service will be Saturday 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Myron Berry will officiate. Burial will be in Cemetery Park, Iron Mountain, Michigan. Memorials may be made in Mike's memory to the Dickinson County Cancer Society.
