Obituary

Michael "Mickey" T. Mahon, 81, of Crystal Falls, passed away June 28, 2013, North Star Health System, Iron River. He was born January 18, 1932, in Stambaugh, Mich., son of the late John and Evelyn (Harrington) Mahon. Michael grew up in Iron River and graduated with honors from the Iron River High School, Class of 1950. He then went into the Jordan Seminary, Menominee, Mich., for two years before going to St. Nazianz Seminary, St. Nazianz, Wis., for two years. Michael also attended the St. Paul Seminary, St. Paul., Minn. and St. John's Provincial Seminary, Plymouth, Mich. Michael received an Associate of Art Degree and was a tutor on foreign languages in Tuscon, Ariz. He did his graduate studies on Theology in Holland, Netherlands, as well as in Switzerland. Upon returning to the area, Michael worked as Case Worker for Iron County for two years, Director of Social Services for Menominee County for two years and as Director of Social Services for Dickinson County for two years. He received a scholarship to attend Catholic University in Washington D.C. where he received his Master Degree in Social Work. After receiving his Masters, Michael was named Associate Director of Staff Development for the Department of Social Services in Lansing for three years. In 1963, he became Area Representative for the State of Michigan Department of Social Services and resided in Marquette for twelve years. Michael was a consultant for the Diocese of Tuscon, Ariz., where he rewrote the personnel manual. He was selected to join a visitation of Buddhist Temples in China by their University of California at Berkley with John Blofeld, Phd., an expert of Buddhism from London. He taught Social Studies Comparative Religion and Logic at Bay College in Escanaba for many years. Michael was the secretary for Marquette Diocesan Community Services Committee for many years. He aslo participated in story telling at the University of Tennessee in Johnston City. Michael was instrumental on getting PineCrest an approved medical care facility in Powers, Mich. He studied Religion at Loyala University in Chicago, receiving his Master Degree in Religious Studies in 1980. In 1994, he moved to Swan Lake in Iron County. He was President of the UP Community Mental Health Directors Association and was Director at Camp Gibbs in Iron County. He enjoyed his younger year's trout fishing with his father. Among Mickey's friends were St. Pio the Capuchin Priest, Mystic and Stigmatist of San Giovanni di Rotondo, Italy, Teresa Neuman of Konnersreuth, the Mystic and Stigmatist whose process for canonization is underway at the Vatican, whom he visited on his many trips to Europe. Michael is survived by two sisters, Mary Wall, Caspian, Mich., Patricia Mahon, Loveland, Colo; nephews and nieces, Dan (Nancy) Wall, Gladstone, Tom (Peggy) Wall, Bismark, N.D., Robert (Becky) Wall, Eden Prairie, Minn., John Shields, Debbie Thunderhawk, Diane Thunderhawk, Gary Stuhr, Patty Ulrich, Kelly Kangas, Kevin Kangas; many great- and great-great-nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one sister, Marge (Mahon) Kangas; one brother John Mahon; nephews, Gregory Stuhr, David Kangas, and one niece, Sharon Kangas. The visitation will be Saturday, August 24, 2013, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at St. Agnes Catholic Church, Iron River. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11:00 a.m., Saturday at the church. Concelebrants will be Rev. Fr. Gregory Veneklase, Rev. Fr. Jeffrey Kurtz, and Rev. Fr. Raymond Valerio. Burial will be in Resthaven Cemetery, Iron River.
