Florence-Michael J. "John" Dagostino, age 87, of Florence, Wis., passed away Thursday, January 10, 2019, at the Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center, Iron Mountain, Mich.
He was born April 28, 1931, in Norway, Mich., son of the late Michael and Lucille (Meress) Dagostino. John grew up in Florence and attended Florence High School. He proudly served in the United States Air Force and upon his honorable discharge returned to Florence. John married Barbara Vassar on June 5, 1954 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Florence. He worked for many years as a butcher for Rabashaws Grocery Store, Florence. John along with his wife owned and operated Lloyds Restaurant in Florence for 20 years and while owning the restaurant he worked as a logger, deputy sheriff for Florence County and as an electrician for Commonwealth Power and Water. He served as Road Commissioner and Town Chairman for the Town of Commonwealth. John served as President of the Florence Lions Club and was a member of both the Florence VFW Post# 3635 and the American Legion Meyers-Youngell Post #211 and a member of St. Mary Catholic Church.
He enjoyed hunting, making firewood, going to his camp, and especially the time he spent making maple syrup with his son and grandson.
John is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Barbara; one son, James (Bobbi) Dagostino, Florence; one brother, Ernest Dagostino, Florence; ten grandchildren, Joshua, Jamie, Cortney, Kristen, Michael, Thomis, Steve, Tony, Fred and Dawn; many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by three foster daughters, Dolly, Suzanne and Sharon; one brother, Ed Meress; and one sister, Theresa Bowser.
Visitation will be held Monday, January 14, 2019 from 9:30 a.m. until 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, Florence. Prayers will be recited at the church on Monday at 10:00 a.m. Burial will take place in St. Mary Cemetery, Florence, Wis. in the Spring. Military honors will be accorded at graveside.
