Mary Catherine Stanek, 92, of Buck Lake, passed away Sunday, January 19, 2014, at Northstar Health System, Iron River, Mich. She was born May 18, 1921, daughter of the late Albert and Stella Klima. Mary attended and graduated from the former Alpha Porter High School, Class of 1939. Upon graduation she worked in Chicago at Tabin Picker and Crane Company and also attended Century College of Medical Technology. She married Joseph Stanek in 1946. They resided in Chicago until 1950, when they purchased the family farm and moved back to the Buck Lake District. Mary worked as a Lab Tech at the Crystal Falls Community Hospital for 23 years, retiring in 1982. Mary served as a lector minister and held various offices in the Women's Guild at St. Edwards Catholic Church in Alpha. She was a member of Guardian Angels Church, Crystal Falls, Mich. Mary enjoyed life on the farm, family gatherings, playing bingo, bowling in her earlier years and doing various crossword puzzles. She was an excellent cook and carried on with the traditional Polish dishes and pastries. She is survived by two sons Dennis (Cheryl) Stanek, Gladstone, Mich. and David Stanek of Buck Lake; one daughter, Donna (William) Pankratz, Rochester Hills, Mich.; two brothers, Frank Klima, Virginia, Minn. and Stanley (Mary Ellen) Klima, North Olmstead, Ohio; two sisters, Jean Musial, Chicago, Ill. and Nancy Horansky, Rocky River, Ohio; eight grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Mary was preceded in death by her husband Joseph; one son Allen Sylvester Stanek; one granddaughter, Joey Stanek; one grandson, Ryan McCole; four brothers, Albert Klima, Walter Klima, Leonard Klima and Edward Klima and two sisters, Eleanor Klima and Violet Miller. Visitation will be Thursday, January 23, 2014, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Jacobs-Plowe Funeral Home, Crystal Falls. The Funeral Mass will be held Friday, January 24, 2014, 11:00 a.m. at Guardian Angels Catholic Church, Crystal Falls. Rev. Fr. Jeffrey Kurtz will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery, Crystal Falls.
