Mary Beth Haavisto, 62, of Niagara, passed away Monday, May 18, 2015, at St. Luke's Hospital, Milwaukee, Wis. after a valiant fight with a rare disease called DRESS Syndrome.
She was born September 3, 1952, in Norway, Mich., daughter of the late Chester and Lucille (Tappy) Hohol.
Mary Beth grew up in Niagara and graduated from Niagara High School, Class of 1971. She went on to attend Belin School of Nursing where she received her degree as a Registered Nurse. Mary Beth married Arne Haavisto on August 4, 1973, at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Niagara. They resided in Green Bay for a year and a half while Mary Beth completed her nursing degree. In 1974, they moved back to Niagara. She worked at the old Dickinson County Hospital in the operating room, Maryhill Manor for 14 years as Director of Nursing and then Northpointe Behavioral Health for over 20 years, where she served as an RN and then the utilization manager for Dickinson, Iron and Menominee Counties. Her work with Northpointe touched persons throughout the Upper Peninsula.
She was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church, the Niagara 4-H, Niagara Rescue Squad for 20 years, a founding member of the Tri-County Horse Organization, member of the Niagara Historical Society, the Niagara Medical Society, served on the committee for the Medical Scholarship at Niagara High School and served as a Niagara School Board Member.
Mary Beth is survived by her loving husband of 41 years, Arne; one daughter, Amy (Brian) Kind, Waunakee, Wis.; one brother, John Hohol, McFarland, Wis. and two grandchildren, George and Madeline.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Patrick Hohol and Chester Hohol, Jr.
Visitation will be held Friday, June 5, 2015, from 2:30 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Niagara. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, 4:00 p.m. at the church. Rev. Fr. Matt Settle will officiate. Burial will be in Niagara Cemetery, Niagara.
