Niagara:
Martin "Pope" Ponzio, age 83, of Niagara, passed away Tuesday, March 8, 2005, at Maryhill Manor in Niagara.
He was born November 5, 1921, in Niagara, Wisconsin, the son of the late Mike and Mary (Boerner) Ponzio. Martin attended Niagara School and graduated high school in 1940. He was in the US Navy from 1941-1945 during World War II. He went back into the service for the Korean War from 1950-1952. He married Eileen Davis June 7, 1952 in Redgranite, Wisconsin. Martin was the president of Union Local 1166 for 33 years. He was also on the City Council for over 30 years. Martin retired from Pentair in 1986. He was president of the Niagara Sportsman Club for over 35 years, and was also Citizen of the year. He was a charter member of the Niagara VFW and active member of the American Legion Post 136 of Niagara and was a past commander.
Survivors include his wife Eileen, one son Peter Ponzio of Niagara, three daughters Marlene (Richard) Janis of Martin, South Dakota, Renee Ponzio of Rapid City, South Dakota, and Brenda (John) Thiry of Casco, WI, one brother Michael (Mae) Ponzio of Iron Mountain, MI. one sister Beatrice Tarperi of Iron Mountain, and seven grandchildren Novlyn, Peter, Alicia, Whisper Janis, Amanda, Ashley Ponzio, and Beau Thiry, and four great grandchildren, Daniel, Nathaniel, Marella Bull Bear and Mikhail Ponzio.
Besides his parents Martin was preceded by three brothers Joseph, James and Gabrial Ponzio, one sister Vivian Harmon and one granddaughter Katelinn Thiry.
Visitation will be Thursday, March 10, 2005, from 4 – 8 p.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home Niagara Chapel. A Veterans Memorial Service will be offered Thursday at 7:15p.m. at the funeral home. Prayers will be recited Thursday, 7:30p.m. at the funeral home. Funeral services will be recited Friday 10:00a.m at the Funeral Home with the Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 10:30a.m. at St. Anthony's Catholic Church in Niagara. Fr. Michael Betley will be officiating. Burial will be in Niagara Cemetery.
