Martha Lou Smith, 73, Fence, Wis., died Tuesday, March 11, 2008, at Armstrong Creek, Wis. She was born December 6, 1934, in Fence, daughter of the late Edward and Katherine (Moller) Thomas. In 1951 she married William Nichols. He preceded her in death in 1966. On October 28, 1978, in Kingsford, Mich., she married Kenneth Smith. He survives. Martha attended school in Fence and lived most of her life there except for some time in Cudahy, Wisconsin. In Cudahy she worked for the Public Schools. Martha was a waitress at the former Kusmitch Restaurant in Florence, Wisconsin and did housekeeping in area homes and also cared for young children in her home. She was a volunteer and served meals to seniors at the Fence Town Hall. Being an avid cook anyone visiting or near Martha was fed. She enjoyed her garden of vegetables and flowers, sewing, crocheting, berry picking, fishing, rebating, playing cards and the domino game "chicken feet". Survivors include her husband, Kenneth Smith, Fence, one daughter, Virginia (Gene) Keen, Wausau, Wis., six sons, Donald (Bonnie) Nichols, Merrill, Wis., Wayne (Dorothy) Nichols, Florence, Edward (Rose) Nichols, Peshtigo, Wis., Phillip Nichols, Fence, Glen Nichols, Spread Eagle, Wis., Michael (Carol) Nichols, Cudahy; two step-children, David (Candice) Smith, Aurora, Colo., Virginia Smith, Milwaukee, Wis.; three sisters, Laverne Moddie, Armstrong Creek, Doris Schuirmann, Iron Mountain, Mich., Betty (Ben) Janczewski, Armstrong Creek; two brothers, Patrick (Joanne) Thomas, Armstrong Creek and Walter (Doris) Thomas, Norway, Mich. She is further survived by 21 grandchildren, Jesse, Joshua, Jill, Sherry, James, Gregory, Hope, David, Johnathan, Adam, Teresa, William, Steven, Katie, Tammi, Jeff, Luke, Becky, Beth, Jenny, Craig; 11 great-grandchildren, Briar, Hannah, Sidney, Jaron, Dani, Aaliyah, Trey, Dominic, Kylynn, Leah, Branden; three step-grandchildren, Daniel, Michael, Roseann and one great step-grandchild, Zole. Besides he parents and husband, William Nichols, she was preceded in death by, three sisters, Marion Meress, Lorraine Neuens, Ruth Olive, one brother, William Thomas; one grandchild, Christopher Michael and one great-grandchild, Analiyah. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the church. The Rev. Timothy Smith will officiate. Burial will be in the spring at Hillside Cemetery, the Fence.
