Crystal Falls: Mark (Larry) Lawrence Johnson 74, of Crystal Falls, Michigan, died Tuesday, August 5, 2003, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain, Michigan. Mark (Larry) was born August 31, 1928, in Flint Michigan, son of the late Dr. & Mrs. Frank D. Johnson. Mark graduated from Cadillac (MI) High School and received an appointment to Annapolis V-5 Midshipman Academy. In addition to his three and a half years in the Navy, he also served three years in the Marines serving in Korea, Cuba and Paris Island with the rank of staff sergeant. Following his years in service, he attended Michigan State University, where he graduated with highest honors in the field of electrical engineering. He also attended NYU while working for Bell Labs. He joined General Motors in 1957 where he worked as a Senior Project Engineer for Delco Electronics Division for the development of inertial guidance systems used in Apollo, Titan, and Gemini space programs. In 1962 he attended MIT while working on the Apollo space program. Mark(Larry) married Dorothy (Jean) Bailey in Flint, Michigan on November 24, 1951. Mark and Dorothy (Jean and Larry) retired to the Crystal Falls area of Michigan's Upper Peninsula in 1988, where they had 15 happy years of outdoor activity and playing duplicate bridge. Mark (Larry) was known by all as a very nice man and he will be sadly missed. Mark(Larry) is survived by his wife Dorothy (Jean), two sons Frank (Paula) Johnson and Mark (Jill) Johnson, one daughter Margaret (Richard) Hackner, nine grandchildren Jacob, Mark, Sarah, Jennifer, Katie, Rebecca, Allison, Lisa and Jonathan, one brother John "Dan" (Claire), two half-sisters Helene (Gary) Hodek and Kathy (Fred) Strange and one sister-in-law Nelda Schumacher. Besides his parents, Mark (Larry) was preceded in death by a son John Michael Johnson, a sister and brother-in-law Mary Ann and Merlin Iverson, a brother and sister-in-law Frank "Gordon" and Jan Johnson and by a brother-in-law John Schumacher. Visitation will be held Friday, August 8, 2003, from 4 – 7p.m. at the Jacobs-Plowe Funeral Home in Crystal Falls, MI., and on Monday, August 11, from 12:00 to 2:00 p.m. at the Family Center at Wisconsin Memorial Park in Brookfield, WI.
