Margaret "Magee" Hult Johnson, 81, of Iron Mountain, passed away peacefully at her home on Friday, November 30, 2012. She was born on July 11, 1931, in Gladstone, Michigan, daughter of the late Dr. Otto and Beverly (Hoover) Hult. Magee grew up in Gladstone and graduated from Gladstone High School. She attended the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Va. and went on to attend the University of Michigan where she received a degree in Physical Education. Her first teaching position was in East Lansing, Michigan. Magee married Dr. Lorn Johnson on June 30, 1956 in Escanaba. She taught in Escanaba before moving to Iron Mountain where she took a position as the Physical Education Teacher at the Iron Mountain High School. She left teaching after two years to raise her family and perform community service. Magee loved her music and was a very active member at the Our Saviour's Lutheran Church where she served as director of the Second Sunday Singers. She also served as choir director of the Holy Trinity Episcopal Church for many years. Magee served as Dickinson County Community Chorus Director for eighteen years. She served as GFWC Women's Club as President, Dickinson County Council for the Arts, Festival of the Arts, founding member and chair. Projects included, Out to Lunch, Detroit Symphony, Art Train, Opera, Mitch Miller, and many others. Dickinson County Memorial Hospital Foundation Trustee, Dickinson County Hospital League, Bay de Noc Community College Bay West, volunteer board member, Guys and Dolls, actress, Sound of Music, actress and singer, Community Schools Founding Member, United States Ski Association, race coordinator, Ski-Ters Water Show, advisor, Downtown Development Authority, chair person, Upper Peninsula Medical Advisory Board, Dickinson County Historical Society Board Member, 2000 World Cup Community Events Committee, Matinee Musical and Chippewa Club member. She received many awards, including, One of the Most Influential People of Dickinson County in the 20th Century – 2001, President's Distinguished Citizen Award, Northern Michigan University – 1974, Volunteer Leadership Award, Michigan – 1966, Jaycees Distinguished Service Award – 1976, City of Iron Mountain, Recognition as Founding Member of Festival of the Arts, Kiwanis Distinguished Service Award – 1991, Statement of Appreciation – 16 years of faithful service to the music ministry, Our Saviour's Lutheran Church. Magee is survived by her loving husband of 56 years, Lorn; two sons, Neal (Kathy) Johnson, Iron Mountain, Paul (Ruth) Johnson, Minneapolis, Minn.; two daughters, Lynn Schauls, Frederic, Wis., Catherine (John) Blomquist, Iron Mountain; two sisters, Mary Oakes, Muskegon, Mich., Karen Nokamura, San Francisco, Calif.; seven grandchildren, Kristen (Brian) Chapman, Carrin (Matthew) Brookshaw, Nick Pedo, Zachery Johnson, Brad Blomquist, Olivia Schauls and Tsuko Johnson; and numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Magee was preceded in death by one sister, Gretchen Weber. The visitation will be Thursday, December 6, 2012, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Our Saviour's Lutheran Church, Iron Mountain. The Celebration of Life Service will be Thursday, 12:00 p.m. at the church. Rev. Stephen Cowen, Rev. Lori and Rev. Lee Liverance will concelebrate. Burial will be in Cemetery Park, Iron Mountain. A Memorial Music Scholarship will be established in Magee's memory.
