Obituary

Henry Malcolm McNeil, 83, of Crystal Falls, passed away Sunday, January 6, 2013, at Iron County Medical Care Facility, Crystal Falls. Malcolm, a well-known retired businessman, was born on August 22, 1929, son of the late Henry and Adina (Segerson) McNeil. He was a lifelong resident of Crystal Falls, and graduated from Crystal Falls High School, Class of 1947. He was a distinguished Veteran of the United States Army, a Life Member of the American Legion Post No. 87 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Tufts-Rondon Post No. 2891, a member of United Lutheran Church, former Board Member at the First National Bank of Crystal Falls, former President of the U.P. Sports Hall of Fame, former NMU Wildcats Board Member, a Mason (F.&A.M.), and former member of the Lions Club. Malcolm served with the U.S. Army, radio section, AG Casualty Division Headquarters in Korea as a casualty reporter until 1952, when he returned to Crystal Falls where he was Owner/Operator of the McNeil Mobil Service Station following his father's death. In the mid-50s he began sponsoring basketball, baseball, and bowling teams, most notably the McNeil Oilers, and hosted numerous sporting events including the annual Tournament of Champions in Crystal Falls. After he sold the gas station in 1985, he continued to sponsor the McNeil Oilers, serve on the Bank Board and work for the Diamond Drill newspaper until he fully retired to his home on Long Lake. He is survived by two daughters, Susan (David) Lehto; Diane (Rob) Emo; one son, Malcolm Scott McNeil; 11 grandchildren; one sister, Jean (Jack) Wicklund; a niece, Marcia (Rick) Mathes; son-in-law, Bob Francisco; other relatives, friends, and scores of McNeil Oilers. In addition to his parents, Malcolm was preceded in death by his wife, Marilyn and daughter, Nancy Francisco. The visitation will be held Friday, January 11, 2013, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Jacobs-Plowe Funeral Home, Crystal Falls. Visitation will also be held Saturday, January 12, 2013, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the United Lutheran Church, Crystal Falls. The funeral service will be 11:00 a.m., Saturday at the church. Rev. Micheal Laakko will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery, Crystal Falls. Military honors will be accorded by the East Side Veterans Council with a Pass-In-Review ceremony 10:45 a.m., Saturday at the church. In lieu of flowers, the family has established a McNeil Oiler's Scholarship Fund which will be awarded annually to a Forest Park Senior Basketball player.
