Mahlon "Mickey" Horwitz, age 85, of Norway, Mich., passed away at home on January 29, 2019, surrounded by his family.

He was born October 5, 1933, in Detroit, Mich. Mickey received a Bachelor of Arts from Olivet College, a Master's from Northern Michigan University, and went on to touch many lives as a lifelong educator. "Mr. Horwitz" (as he was known to many) taught at Iron Mountain High School for 28 years, retiring in 1994. In addition to teaching, Mickey also shared his talents with IMHS' intramural and junior varsity athletics program; the school newspaper; and as advisor of the junior class and Hi-Y Club. He created memories for many by opening his home and heart to family, students, friends, and strangers who needed a helping hand. Mickey challenged his children and his students to think creatively and independently, and to strive for what they wanted. He was also always eager for a good board game with family and friends. Mickey served as a Road to Recovery driver coordinator for several years; volunteered at Veteran's Administration Medical Center and for Red Cross Blood Drives; managed Grace United Methodist's food pantry; and shared his love for swimming with special needs children throughout his life.

Survivors include his loving wife of 59 years, Patricia; two sons, Michael, Boise, Idaho, and Mark, Norway, Mich.; and one daughter, Staci, Minneapolis, Minn.

He was preceded in death by his beloved mother-in-law, Alpha Wendt.

Private family services will be held.
