Florence:
Lucille Meta Dorothea (Haberkorn) McMullen, age 95, of Florence, passed away September 19,2005, at the Florence Villa Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Florence.
Lucille was born May 15, 1910, in Florence, the daughter of the late William C. and Louise (Blome) Haberkorn. She graduated from Florence High School in 1928 and Normal Teachers Training in 1929. She continued her education at Oshkosh State College, now University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, and Northern Michigan University of Marquette. Lucille started her teaching career in a one room school house in the Brule settlement. She also taught in Long Lake, Fence, Aurora, and the Florence Grade School for several years. In 1970, she retired after 25 years of teaching.
She married Walter G. McMullen on May 13, 1933, in Iron Mountain, Mich. He preceded her in death on December 2, 1966.
She was the oldest confirmed member of St. John's Lutheran Church and Ladies Aid. Her remarkable memory and continued contributions to the Florence County Historical Society were instrumental in the success of this organization. Lucille touched the lives of scores of children in the Florence Community and was affectionately know to many as "Auntie Lu".
She is survived by her son, Gerald (Marian) McMullen of Spokane, Wash..; her daughter Karen (Robert) Beckstrom of Oshkosh, Wis.; five grandchildren, Nicole Prestley and Kara McMullen of Spokane, Wash., Gerald (Maggie) McMullen, Jr., of Bremerton, Wash., Carl (Janelle) Beckstrom of Indianapolis, Ind., and Sonja (Tim) Voeller of Mequon, Wis.; four great-grandsons, Jarred Prestley, Brennan Prestley, Jacob McMullen and Henry Voeller, four great-granddaughters, Larissa Prestley, Kelsey McMullen, Jessica McMullen and Ella Beckstrom; one sister, Doris Knoke of Florence; one brother-in-law, Ronald (Rita) McMullen; four sisters-in-law, Kay Bjerke, Delores (Michael) Duginske, Shirley Askeland and Dorothy (Leland) Beyersdorf; special friend Hazel Gehlhoff, numerous nieces and nephews and other relatives.
Besides her parents and husband Walter, Lucille was preceded in death by two brothers, John and William; two step-brothers, Herbert and Walter; and three step-sisters, Alma, Almeda and Esther.
Memorials can be made to St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, Florence, Wis. in her memory.
Visitation will be on Friday, September 23, 2005, from 10-12a.m. at St. John's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Florence, followed by Funeral services at 12:00p.m. Pastor Andrew Schwartz will officiate. Interment will be at the Commonwealth Cemetery.
