Obituary

Louis C. "Louie" Schintgen, 89, of Pembine, passed away Wednesday, May 9, 2012, at Dickinson County Healthcare System in Iron Mountain. He was born January 6, 1923, in Niagara, son of the late Henry and Anna (VanPembrook) Schintgen. Louie graduated from Niagara High School in 1941. He married Lorraine Makoutz on March 1, 1944, in Ypsilanti, Mich., where they were both employed during World War II at Willow Run Bomber Plant. Most of their married years were spent in Niagara, first working side-by-side in their family run coal business. Louie later worked at the Niagara Paper Mill, retiring from the mill in 1985 after 28 ½ years. After retirement, Louie and Lorraine resided in Pembine, and spent winters in Deland, Fla. Both Louie and Lorraine moved into Maryhill Manor in Niagara in 2010. Louie was a member of St. Anthony Catholic Church. He was honest and hard working. He dearly loved his wife and family. Louie liked nothing better than to have them around, grandchildren and all. The more the merrier! He would stuff as many as could fit in his little Florida trailer during their winter visits. Also, you didn't DARE open your wallet when he was around. Everything had to be "his treat". He was a generous man, always worrying about his family's welfare. Those that knew him well knew that under his quiet, sometimes gruff exterior beat a heart of gold. Louie loved fishing; walleye fishing in his tiny wooden boat at Fortune Lake, the many hours spent on Lake Superior chasing the "Mighty Coho", and even night fishing for shrimp on the ocean. He'd never eat those delicious shrimp though. He said they were "baitfish". He also loved gardening and taking care of his yard. He was often proud of having the first ripe tomato in the neighborhood. He kept Scot's "Weed and Feed" Co. in business for many years keeping up the most lush lawn at Hi-Lo-Acres. He will be greatly missed by all who loved him. Louie is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Lorraine; three sons, Jack (Cathy) Schintgen of Fairchild, Wis., Dennis (Eileen) Schintgen of Deland Fl., and Louis (Teena) Schintgen, of Niagara; three daughters, Connie (Robert) Johnston of Marinette, Wis., Wendy (Bill) Hanson, of Pembine, and Lorrie (Lloyd) Cudnohufsky of Iron Mt; one brother, William (Betty) Schintgen of Pembine; 22 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Henry and Joseph Schintgen, three sisters, Marcella Cunningham, infant sisters Dorothy and Annabelle and one grandson, Scott Schintgen. The visitation will be Saturday, May 26, 2012, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Niagara. The Memorial Mass will be celebrated 11:00 a.m., Saturday at the church. Rev. Matt Settle will officiate.
