Louis A. "Louie" Cini, lifelong resident of Iron Mountain, Michigan's "North Side" died Friday morning, July 30, 2010, at his home.
Louie was born November 5, 1930, son of the late Louis and Doris (Carollo) Cini. He married Julia Anegon in 1951; she survives. He served for nine years in the United States Army National Guard, with the rank of Master Sergeant. Louie also served as a Dickinson County Deputy Sheriff. He worked for M.A. Hanna Mining Companies and Groveland Mine site for twenty-nine years, retiring as Mine Superintendent . He was recognized internationally as a leading explosive/drilling and blasting expert. During his career, Louie spent five years in Newfoundland managing the Iron Ore Company of Canada's mining operations.
Louie also served as General Manager for Serra Matosa Mines in Columbia, South America; Hanna's operations in Riddle, Oregon and Hibbing, Minnesota.
He was a self made man, who enjoyed gourmet cooking, wine making, cutting and splitting wood, hunting, fishing, golfing and most of all spending time at camp with friends and family. During their retirement years Julia and Louie spent part of the winter in Cape Canaveral, Florida.
Louie was an active member of St. Mary's Orthodox Church, where he served as President of the Parish Council and was instrumental in the construction of St. Mary's Soccer Complex on Pine Mountain Road.
He is survived by his wife, Julia Cini; son, Mark and daughter-in-law, Debra; grandson, Michael Cini; brother, Alfio Cini, sister-in-law, Gladys Cini; numerous nieces and nephews.
Though he may be gone, his legacy will continue. He was from an era when a handshake or his word was a bond, and his friendship was everlasting.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 3, 2010, from 12:00 noon to 3:00 p.m. at Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron Mountain. The funeral service will be 3:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Father Mark Hagan will preside.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Dr. Don Jacobs and Dr. David Mahadev for their excellent and compassionate care over the years.
Pallbearers are Tim Lintz, Michael Cini, Cousin Mike Cini, Tony Azevedo, Greg Rigoni, and Michael Gerard.
Honorary Pallbearers are Alfio Cini, Jimmy Anegon , Dr. Donald Jacobs, and George Kotonias.
Directly following the funeral services, a Mercy Meal will be served at the Chippewa Club in Iron Mountain.
