Lois Jean Grell, 90, of Florence, Wis., passed away Saturday, March 7th, 2009, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital, Iron Mountain, Mich.
She was born December 11, 1918, in Antigo, Wis. daughter of the late Richard (Bert) Nixon and Edna (Taylor) Nixon, she was the oldest of seven siblings. Lois moved to Florence with her family in 1929. She married Ernest J. Grell in 1939, and had two children.
Lois graduated from a Milwaukee School of Cosmetology in 1938. She worked at various service jobs during her life and volunteered her time to several local groups, including the American Red Cross. Lois was also proud of her time served as a Florence Deputy Sheriff in the 1950's. She and Ernie spent 10 years living in Black River Falls, Wis. and moved back to Florence in 1981, to enjoy retirement.
She was a very talented person who gave her time willingly to family and friends. Lois loved spending time with her grandchildren and taking them to "camp" and Keyes Lake. She was an excellent seamstress, handcrafting many gifts for loved ones, such as her Christmas pajamas for the grandkids, beautiful braided wool rugs and quilts. Lois was also a wonderful cook, known for her pies, chocolate cake and Italian cuisine. She enjoyed gardening, bird watching, playing cards and Scrabble, crossword puzzles, sports and TV game shows. In her early years she hunted, fished and played baseball on local teams.
Lois was a very fun-loving, positive person, never complaining and always caring for others more than herself. She never said goodbye, instead she'd say, "See you next time." Lois will be dearly missed by her family.
She is survived by a daughter, Joan A. (Jack) Schloesser, Oshkosh, Wis.; a son, Thomas N. Grell, Florence; her sister, Marjorie (Bob) Bicigo, Crystal Falls, Mich.; five grandchildren, Jeff (Jeanne) Schloesser, Winneconne, Wis., Jon (Jennifer) Schloesser, Oshkosh, Jennifer (Jim) Navin, Oshkosh, Angela (Israel) Brit, Southside, Ala., Kate Grell, Auburn, Ala.; seven great- grandchildren; several nieces and nephews, including special nieces, Marge and Kelly.
