Lo Anne Marie Smith, 85 of Channahon Illinois, died peacefully at Lightways Hospice House on Tuesday, September 15, 2026.
Lo Anne was born on April 25, 1941, in Norway, MI, to George Bernard LaPointe and Zenaide Adele LaPointe (Bastian).
She graduated from Quinnesec High School and attended Northern Michigan University in Marquette Michigan.
Lo Anne was an incredible mother who raised five children and two grandchildren. She was a Teacher’s Aide in Special Education for many years with the Valley View School District in Illinois and was very involved with St. Dominic Catholic Church in Bolingbrook IL, including their choir group where she sang in a band with her husband, Jerry. She taught CCD for many years at the church, was part of the bereavement/grief committee, and served as a eucharistic minister. She was an avid reader and loved her garden, her pets, puzzles and outings to local craft shows.
Lo Anne and Gerald “Jerry” Smith were married in Quinnesec Michigan. They eventually moved to Chicago, Illinois, to raise a family and moved to Bolingbrook, IL, in 1972 where they had a house built and raised a family of five children. Lo Anne and Jerry eventually retired and moved back to Iron Mountain MI for 12 years, with her final move to Channahon IL in 2019.
She is survived by her children: Maureen “Mo” Youngs (Smith) and husband Lawrence “Larry” Youngs; Kathleen “Kathy” Smith; and Audrey Smith. Grandchildren: Melissa “Missy” Youngs and fiancé Jonathan Catigano, Samantha “Sammy” (Youngs) Harrelson and husband Erik Harrelson, Christopher Youngs, Nicholas Taylor-Smith, Austin Taylor-Smith, Quinn Rzeznikiewicz, Jay Sweeten and Felicia (Parham) Aman. Great-grandchildren: Ean Sweeten, Cameron Harrelson, Keegan & Kori Aman.
Lo Anne was preceded in death by her parents and brother George “Chum” LaPointe of Quinnesec MI, her husband Gerald “Jerry” Smith, son Gerald “JJ” Smith and daughter Michelle “Micki” Sweeten (Smith).
Visitation will be Sunday, September 20, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., at Jacobs Funeral Home (1025 Carpenter Avenue) in Iron Mountain MI to honor Lo Anne’s life. Prayers will be recited at 12:30 p.m., at the funeral home. Burial will take place at Quinnesec Cemetery (4651 Menominee St, Quinnesec, MI 49876) at 1:00 p.m., with Father Greg Heikkala officiating. All family and friends are invited to join the family for a luncheon afterwards at the little white church down the road, now a venue called Lavender Skies, 3300 Menominee Street, Quinnesec.
The family would like to give special thanks to Lightways Hospice and Serious Illness Care in Joliet IL, who provided great care and comfort to both Lo Anne and the family.
