Obituary

Lila L. Floodstrand, 90, of Crystal Falls, passed away Sunday, December 26, 2010, at the Iron County Medical Care Facility, Crystal Falls. She was born December 14, 1920, in Bruce Crossing, daughter of the late Hjalmer and Lempi (Isatalo) Huhta. Lila married George Floodstrand. He preceded her in death on September 3, 1973. Lila entered Northern Michigan University as a freshman the same time her daughter, Mary Jo, was a senior. Her studies, including a Masters Degree, fulfilled her dream of going to college and becoming a teacher. She taught English at the former Crystal Falls High School (currently Forest Park H.S.) for many years. During her lifetime, besides being a homemaker, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, Lila was a newspaper reporter and first woman commissioner in Crystal Falls. While reporting on the Crystal Falls city commission for the Iron Mountain News she became interested in government and decided to run for public office and was elected to a three-year term on the commission. Lila was active in her church and community. She served on various boards including the city Women's Club and as a director for the former Crystal Falls Municipal Hospital. Survivors include, one daughter, Mary Jo (Jerry) Jarvis, Marquette; one son, Fred (Utimia) Floodstrand, Beebe, Ark.; one step-daughter, Lois Floodstrand, one step-son, Ken Floodstrand, both of Appleton, Wis.; five grandchildren, Daniel, Benjamin (Ellen),and Timothy Jarvis, Lisa (Don) Lehman, Laila Floodstrand; nine great-grandchildren, Ashley, Joe, Emily, Sasha, Zoe, and Gabrielle Jarvis, Jacob, and Madelyn Lehman, Genesis Floodstrand; two step-grandchildren, Tom (Cynthia) Floodstrand, Carol Ann (Ken) Hartman; two step-great-grandchildren Alexandria and Elizabeth Floodstrand; one sister, Armaida Maki, Bruce Crossing; other relatives and friends. Besides her parents and husband she was preceded in death by, four sisters, Lillian Johnson, Martha Rajala, Senia and Mae Etelemaki; and two brothers, Ken and Matt Huhta. Visitation will be 1:00 p.m. until 2:00 p.m., Thursday, December 30, 2010, at United Lutheran Church, Crystal Falls. Funeral service will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday at the church. Rev. Michael Laakko will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery, Crystal Falls. Lila's grandchildren will be pallbearers.
