Lester G. Perkins, 91, of Niagara, Wis., passed away Sunday, July 18, 2010, at Dickinson County Healthcare System, Iron Mountain, Mich.
He was born December 12, 1918, in North Chicago, Ill., son of the late Alan and Ethel (Gumm) Perkins. Lester attended school in Niagara. He served in the United States Army Air Force during WWII where he spent some time in Australia. There he met the love of his life, Lyla Nunn. They were married February 24, 1945, in Ipswich, Australia.
Lester and Lyla started a family in Lower Michigan and later moved back to Niagara in 1965. He enjoyed traveling back to Australia with his family and being outdoors. Lester worked construction as a welder, retiring at the age of 65. He was also a past member of the Masonic Lodge.
He is survived by his loving wife, Lyla Perkins; two sons, Allen (Julia) Perkins, Berkeley, Calif., Otis (Ginger) Perkins, Blountsville, Ala.; one daughter, Carla (Warren) Towns, Niagara; six grandchildren, Calvin (Maggie) Towns, Philip (Brittany) Towns, Austin and Cole Perkins, Alex and Claire Perkins; three great-grandchildren, Josie, Lizzy, and Kiera; and a very close friend, Mark Bagnieschi, Niagara.
Lester was preceded in death by one brother, Otis Perkins.
Visitation will be Thursday, July 22, 2010, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Jacobs Funeral Home, Niagara Chapel. The funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Pastor Koychul Shin will officiate. American Legion Cretton-Tutas Post No. 136, Niagara, will accord graveside military honors. Burial will be in Niagara Cemetery, Niagara.
