Obituary

Channing: Lester J. Hiduskey, age 98, of Channing, Michigan, passed away, Tuesday, December 23, 2003, at Bortz Health Care Facility in Petoskey, Michigan. He was born in Iglo, Austria, July 9, 1905, son of Joseph Hidusky and Julia Smorada. Arriving by ship through Ellis Island, as a babe in arms, in 1907, he and his mother rejoined his father Joseph Hidusky in Blue Mound, Illinois. As a teenager, Lester joined his father working at the Stonington Mine in Illinois. In 1925, Lester married Celia Uhyzzia at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church in Macon, Illinois. Lester and Celia moved through Chicago and finally settled in River Rouge, Michigan, where he worked forty years and retired from Great Lakes Steel Mill. Lester commanded the first rolls of steel to leave the new mills in the River Rouge Steel Mill. An expert marksman, he competed at the national level for the steel mill's rifle team. Throughout his entire life, Lester carried a carpenter's tool box. He held a builder's license until 1982. He was a life long member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in River Rouge, Michigan, to which he dedicated much of his time as a carpenter repairing his beloved church. He was a 3rd Degree Member of the River Rouge Council of the Knights of Columbus. An avid sportsman, Lester traveled throughout the UP, and the western states, and Canada to his many favorite hunting and fishing spots. In 1972, Lester retired in Channing, Michigan. He was a member of St. Rose Catholic Church in Channing. During his retirement years, he spent the summers with his grandchildren showing them the beauty of the Upper Peninsula. His favorite spot to take his grandchildren was the Lake of the Clouds in the Porcupine Mountains. At ninety-eight he was an avid reader and still had the handshake of a miner. He is survived by his sister, Pauline (Hidusky) Carr of Florida, and his two sons, Carl (Margaret) Hiduskey of Harbor Springs Michigan; and Lewis Hiduskey of Wyandotte, Michigan, grandchildren Julie (Fred) Harrington and their daughter Maria (Rob) Sargent of Petoskey, Michigan, Roddy (Autumn) Hiduskey and their children Ana and Erik of Roanoke Virginia, Jane Hiduskey and her son Michael, and his family, Lynn Hiduskey and many nieces and nephews. Lester was preceded in death by his wife Celia in 1989, brothers Albert and Michael and grandson Joseph Hiduskey. A funeral mass will be held at 11:30a.m. Saturday, January 3, 2004, at St. Francis Xavier Church in Petoskey, Michigan.
