Crystal Falls:
Leo Burnett Jr., age 65, died Sunday, December 21st, 2003, at home, surrounded by his family.
Leo Gordon Burnett Jr. was born February 27, 1938, to Leo and Juanita Burnett, of Petoskey, Michigan.
He attended grade school at Murray School, Hayes Township; he graduated from Cedar Lake Academy in 1956. Leo married his high school sweetheart Betty Newman on June 9, 1957, in Elkhart, IN.
Leo & Betty's original family had five children, but their great love for young people soon had them adding many others. Leo was a member of the Big Brother's Organization, mentoring young boys. He was in the farm machinery business, Burnett Brothers, in Bay Shore, MI with his father and uncles, for many years. He was a born salesman. He served on the Hayes Township Planning Board and spent some time as Hayes Township Clerk. He also served on the Mastodon Township Zoning Board of Appeals and Planning Commission. Leo was a renowned storyteller, getting as much enjoyment from the telling of a story as the listener did in hearing it.
He was a member of the Iron River Seventh Day Adventist Church. His relationship with Jesus Christ was vital to him, believing that a relationship with Jesus Christ was more important than religion.
Leo is survived by three sons, Leo III (Robin), Chatham, MI; Larry (Lisa Aho), Charlevoix, MI; Michael (Linda), Ooltewah, TN; one daughter Tammy Johnson (Karl), Boyne City, MI; the children of his heart, Brian (Loretta) Halbert, Charlevoix, MI; sixteen grandchildren and two great-grandsons.
Along with his parents, Leo was preceded in death by his daughter Debra, her family and his brother, Ron Burnett of Charlevoix.
We will remember him as husband, father, uncle, grandfather and friend. Let's remember his love of God, devotion to family, laughter, stories, and ability to finagle a piece of pie from almost anyone.
Memorial Services will be held Wednesday, December 24, 2003, at 11:00 a.m, at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Iron River, Michigan. Pastor Duane O'Ffill will officiate. Another Memorial Service will be held Friday, December 26, 2003, at 2:00 p.m., at the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Petoskey, Michigan. Rev. George Dronon will officiate.
