Laurel (Freistrom-Rosen) Schmalz, age 76, of Florence, Wisconsin, passed away Thursday, December 7, 2006, at Dickinson County Healthcare System in Iron Mountain. She was born April 16, 1930, in Kaukauna, Wisconsin, daughter of the late Roy and Blanche (McDowell) Freistrom. She married Sid Rosen in Iron Mountain. He preceded her in death on September 11, 1964. She later married Frank Schmalz and they resided in Spread Eagle, Wisconsin. Laurel enjoyed many hobbies including, sewing, crocheting, knitting, art work, and especially her casino bus trips where she was able to visit with many friends. Survivors include two sons, Dan (Rita) Rosen, Spread Eagle, Wis., Bruce (Jacqueline) Rosen, Iron Mountain; one daughter, Karen Rosen, Iron Mountain; one step-daughter, Sue Lindeman, Thousand Oaks, Calif.; one daughter-in-law, Louise Rosen, Bedford, N.H.; 12 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; special friends, Phyllis Novak and family, Otto & Ellie Ghere, and Tricia Perron. Besides her parents and husband, Sid, she was preceded in death by one son, Aaron Rosen, and two brothers Dean and Lee Freistrom. Private family services were held.
