CRYSTAL FALLS — Katarina Hoenig, 79, of Crystal Falls died Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002, at Iron County Hospital in Iron River.
Katarina was born Aug. 30, 1923, in Ruma, Yugoslavia, daughter of the late George and Rose Sarkanj.
She married Frank Hoenig, and there's quite a story, of dealing with World War II and the political turmoil afterwards. Then trying to get to America 50 years ago, where they could raise their 10 children in a free world and have a better life for their children. During their travel around Europe, Katarina learned to speak five languages and when they arrived in this country they had two suitcases.
Katrina was a remarkable woman, who loved visiting with friends and neighbors, spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was good with her hands, knitting, crocheting and crafts. She was also an excellent cook.
She is survived by her husband, Frank; seven sons, Helmuth and John, both of Amasa, Frank Jr. of Green Bay, Peter (Julie) of Chicago, Gary (Kathy) of Amasa, Joseph (Tanya Pierce) of Amasa and Thomas (Amy) of Amasa; three daughters, Helga Lange of Crystal Falls, Rosie Hoenig of Green Bay, Wis., and Mary Gustafson of Crystal Falls; a brother, Simon of Australia; four sisters, Julia, Elizabeth and Rose, all of Australia and Ethel of Yugoslavia; 15 grandchildren with another on the way; four great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Andrew, Peter and Alex; an infant son, Frank, in 1944, and a son-in-law, Dennis Lange.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Friday at Guardian Angels Catholic Church in Crystal Falls.
A Mass of Resurrection will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the church. Fr. Ray Zeugner will officiate.
