Joyce M. Hassell, 84, of Iron Mountain, Mich., passed away Saturday, May 1, 2010, at ManorCare Health Services, Kingsford, surrounded by her loving family. Joyce was born August 8, 1925, in Iron Mountain, daughter of the late Axel and Erma (Zambon) Peterson. She was a life-long resident of Iron Mountain and a graduate of Iron Mountain High School. After high school, Joyce moved to Detroit and married Oscar Hassell. They moved back to Iron Mountain and Joyce was employed at Kmart and the VA Hospital cafeteria. Oscar preceded her in death in 1991. Joyce enjoyed many hobbies including painting, flower gardening, camping, picnics, collecting antiques, and most of all cooking and spending time with family and friends. She was an active member of First Lutheran Church, Iron Mountain, where she enjoyed Bible studies and quilting. She is survived by one son, Scott (Kimberly) Hassell; one brother, Robert Peterson, Kingsford; two sisters, Marlene (Joseph) Ciochetto, Quinnesec, Bonnie (Gary) Antonetti, Breitung Township; four grandchildren, April, Tracee and Dylan Hassell, Christopher Anderson; five great-grandchildren, Ashlynn and Kaylee D'Angelo, Sabre Comeaux, Karine and Hailey Duncan. In addition to her parents and husband Oscar, Joyce is preceded by one daughter, Holly Joy Hassell. A memorial will be established in Joyce's memory. James Chinery will officiate. Burial will be in Cemetery Park, Iron Mountain.
