Obituary

John D. Smith Sr., 92, of Iron Mountain, passed away Wednesday, October 9, 2013, at Iron County Medical Care Facility, Crystal Falls. He was born July 20, 1921, in Altoona, PA., son of the late Charles and Elda (Ritz) Smith. John served in the U.S. Army as Master Sargent from 1942 to being honorably discharged. He served in the 101st Airborne Division and the 7th Infantry Division. John served in both WWII and the Korean Conflict. He married Franziska Mayer on September 8, 1953, in Germany. They lived in Germany for a few years before moving to Texas. They later traveled to many other places and lived within the United States during his time of service. They finally settled in Iron Mountain in 1983. He was a member of American Martyrs Catholic Church. John was a life member of the Uren-Cooper Johnson American Legion Post No. 50, Iron Mountain, VFW Post No. 3674, Iron Mountain, and the Michigan Order of the Purple Heart, Chapter 1879, Iron Mountain where he served as State Commander. John is survived by one son, John D. (Sue) Smith, Jr., Huntington, Ind.; seven grandchildren, Melissa, Randy, Amanda, David (Patti), Christopher (Jennifer), Cami (Joe) and Casey; seventeen great-grandchildren; one niece, Joyce Ann Koagler, Altoona and nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by one son, Charles Herbert Smith, III; one brother, Charles Herbert Smith Jr.; and one sister Mickey Rentz. Visitation will be Tuesday, October 15, 2013, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron Mountain. The Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Rev. Fr. Joseph Gouin will officiate. Burial will be in Dickinson County Memorial Gardens. The American Legion Post No. 50, the VFW Post No. 3674 and the Michigan Order of the Purple Heart, Chapter 1879 will accord Military Honors at graveside.
