Dr. John R. "Doc" Davidson, age 96, of Crystal Falls, died Sunday, March 12, 2006 at the Iron County Medical Care Facility, Crystal Falls.
He was born September 26, 1909 in Elk Rapids, son of the late James and Mary E. (Hackett) Davidson. On January 2, 1936 he married Wilma "Billie" Richards in Crystal Falls. She preceded him in death on November 16, 1997.
John's family moved to Mancelona in 1912 and he attended St. Anthony's Parochial School and graduated Mancelona High School in 1927. He entered the University of Michigan and graduated from the University of Michigan Dental School in 1932 and began his practice in Crystal Falls on May 22, 1933 and retired on December 31, 1979.
Professionally "Doc" was a Life Member of the American Dental Association, the Michigan Dental Association, the U.P. Dental Society where he served as President, the Dickinson-Iron Dental Society where he served as President and the Delta Sigma Delta Dental Fraternity.
"Doc" was active in sports and a big fan of the Crystal Falls Forest Park Trojans as well as all the U.P. High School teams, the University of Michigan teams and Detroit. In the years 1924 through 1926 he was a member of the Mancelona baseball team and following graduation played for the city teams of Alden, Bellaire and Harbor Springs. In 1933 he became a member of the Crystal Falls City baseball team and played through the 1948 season. He was team captain and representative on the Northern Wisconsin - Michigan Baseball League. While at the University of Michigan he earned Freshman Numerals in basketball and baseball. He was a member of the Crystal Falls basketball team which played under the names of Selmos Café, The Ramblers and Pivatto Grocers and he helped form the Northern Wisconsin - Michigan basketball league and again served as its president. John helped form the Crystal Falls Tennis Club of which he was president and city doubles champion with Earl Rich each of the several years the club was active.
He was a member of the Crystal Falls Golf Club and served as president for several years and was secretary/treasurer for the Crystal Falls Men's Bowling League.
He served as official scorer for the Crystal Falls Forest Park Trojans basketball team from 1945 through 1995. He was inducted into the U.P Sports Hall of Fame in 1988. He helped form and was the first president of the Crystal Falls P.T.A.
John was a member of the Guardian Angels Parish, Past President of the Church Council, instructor for altar servers, Lector, Eucharistic Minister and member and Past President of the Holy Name Society.
Survivors include one daughter, Connie (Peter) Albarello, Crystal Falls; two sons, Terry (Diane) Davidson, Ann Arbor, William R. (Kay) Davidson, Granger, Ind.; eight grandchildren, Patrice (Roy) Deutschmann, Jeanne (Robert) Watts, Mary Beth (Jon) Kingman, Tim (Dara) Davidson, Patrick (Kim) Davidson, John Davidson, David (Lani) Kieft, Ryan (Kim) Kieft; 11 great-grandchildren, Maria and Theresa Watts, Alexa and Kurt Deutschmann, Matthew and Bradley Kingman, Lauren, Sarah, and Emily Davidson, Kaylin Kieft and Marin Davidson. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two sisters, Mary E. Hine, Sr. Margaret Constantia, O.P.; one brother, Francis Davidson, and a half-brother, Gustav L. Bartels.
Visitation will be 4:00 - 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 14, 2006 at the Jacobs-Plowe Funeral Home, Crystal Falls and Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services at the church. The funeral mass will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at Guardian Angels Catholic Church, Crystal Falls. The Rev. Dino Silvestrini will officiate. Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Cemetery, Crystal Falls.
