Obituary

John A. Bannes, 84, of Vulcan, Mich., passed away Thursday, December 10, 2009, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital, Iron Mountain. He was born September 13, 1925, in Chicago, Ill., son of the late John F. and Gertrude (Grubbe) Bannes. John married the former Shirley Zintak on November 16, 1973, in Illinois. John and Shirley lived in Illinois unitl 1985, when they moved to Vulcan. John served in the United States Navy during World War II from November 20, 1943, until June 1, 1946. While in the Navy, he served in both the Pacific and Atlantic Theatres. John was a superintendant for Tinley Park School District 140 in Illinois for 25 years. He was an avid hunter and fisherman who enjoyed the outdoors and loved living on Lake Hamilton. He is survived by his wife, Shirley Bannes; two sons, John Bannes, Lemont, Ill., Richard (Janice) Bannes, Oak Forest, Ill.; two daughters, Karyn Bannes, Tinley Park, Ill., Cheryl (Jay) Nubson, Lewistown, Mont.; one step-son, Daryl Leehaug, Frankfort, Ill.; four step-daughters, Gale (Melvin) Krieger, Rockford, Ill., Dale (James) Canino, Lee's Summit, Mo., Terry (William) Rusin, Frankfort, Janet (William) Spears, Cary, Ill.; one sister, Edith Zima, Cassoplis, Mich.; three grandchildren, Aleks Prosken, Kyle Nubson, and Colter Nubson; eleven step-grandchildren, James (Gina) Canino, Melissa Krieger, Lauren (Jesse) Crupper, Leah Canino, Neal Krieger, Janelle Rusin, Kevin Spears, Evan Krieger, Michael Rusin, Jennifer Spears, and Vincent Spears. Visitation will be Monday, December 14, 2009 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at St. Barbara Catholic Church, Vulcan. American Legion Hall - DeWinter Post No. 145 of Norway, will accord military honors 10:45 a.m. Monday, at the church. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated 11:00 a.m. Monday at the church. Rev. James Roetzer will officiate. Burial will be in Oakridge Cemetery, Hillside, Ill. Memorials may be made in John's name to Hamilton Lakes Association, N833 Hamilton Lake Road, Vulcan, MI 49892.
