Obituary

Joe Lawrence Neargarth, 66, of Niagara, passed away Saturday, February 12, 2001 at the Oscar G. Johnson Veteran Hospital in Iron Mountain. Joe was born September 13, 1944 in Iron Mountain, son of the late Levi and Hulda (Walters) Neargarth. Joe grew up in Pembine, Wis., and attended Pembine High School; graduating in 1963. He worked with his dad in the carpentry business before being drafted by the U.S. Army in August, 1965. Joe was stationed with the 76th Transit Company traveling to parts of West Germany, France and Holland. He married Sandy Jankowski on October 29, 1982 in Escanaba, Mich. After returning from Service, he resumed working with wood and had made waterbeds, furniture, and was a finishing carpenter. He had a family business which his sons were a part of. They built homes, etc. made crafts for shows and selling to the public. When his sons were old enough, they took over the family business. Joe is survived by his wife, Sandy; one daughter, Sammi (Toby Nichols) Neargarth, Green Bay, Wis.; two brothers, Robert (Kay) Neargarth, Illinois and Florida, Earl (Mary) Neargarth, Blue Springs, Mo.; two sisters Margaret (Wayne) Duris, Milwaukee, Wis., Fran Wood, Crivitz, Wis.; father-in-law, Stanley (Jolyne) Jankowski, Rhinelander, Wis.; numerous nieces and nephews. Joe is preceded in death by two sons, Stanley and Levi Neargarth, December 10, 2006; his mother-in-law, Alice Jankowski; two infant brothers, Lawrence and Michael Neargarth. Visitation will be Friday, February 18, 2011, from 9:00-11:00 a.m. at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Niagara. Cretton-Tutas American Legion Post No. 136 will conduct a Veteran Memorial Service, Friday, 10:45 a.m. at the church. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Friday, 11:00 a.m. at the church. Fr. Matt Settle will officiate. Burial will be in Niagara Cemetery. A memorial will be established in Joe's memory. Pallbearers will be Bob Neargarth, Earl Neargarth, Greg Neargarth, Scott Duris, Jim Jankowski, Toby Nichols, Bob McCorkle and Mike Hayes.
