Jayne B. Hamel, 83, of Rockford, Ill, formerly of Fence, Wis., passed away Thursday, November 29, 2007, at Fairhaven Christian Retirement Center, Rockford. She was born August 11, 1924, in Fence, daughter of the late William C. and Olga C. (Olsen) Berklund. Jayne was raised in Fence, and later moved to Big Bay, Mich., in 1939, until her sophomore year in high school. During her junior and senior year of high school, she lived with the Hamels and graduated from Graveraet High School in Marquette, Mich. Jayne married J. Peter Hamel on March 6, 1945, and helped manage the family farm in Fence for 12 years. There she had four children. She followed her husband's hospital administration career moves to Clintonville, Wis., New London, Wis., Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., and Sheboygan, Wis., until his retirement in 1983. During these years, Jayne managed her household as well as working part-time in banking. After a short mission term in Haiti, she returned with her husband to Fence, wintering in Fort Meyers, Fla., retiring finally to Rockford. Jayne enjoyed reading, writing, numerous church activities, traveling, and family reunions. She is survived by her husband, J. Peter Hamel; four children, Rev. William (Karen) Hamel, Apple Valley, Minn., Dr. Peter (Beverly) Hamel, of Hannibal, Mo., Dr. Timothy (June) Hamel, Brodhead, Wis., Wilma (Rev. Peter) Akright, Waupaca,Wis.; thirteen grandchildren, Krista (David) Masterson, Kari (Eric) Berglund, Erica Hamel, Sarah (Christopher) Fuller, Laura (Tyler) Ouillette, John, Peter, Rachel, Katherine, Laura, and Anne Hamel, Andrew (Danielle) and Emily Akright; three great-grandchildren, Emma Berglund, Ian and William Masterson; one brother, Curtis (Adele) Berklund, Spokane, Wash. Besides her parents, Jayne was preceded in death by one brother, William Berklund. Visitation will be Saturday, December 8, 2007, from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM, at the Fence Bible Church, Fence, Wis. The funeral service will be 11:00 AM Saturday, at the church. Rev. Tim Smith will officiate. Burial will be in Fence Cemetery.
