Jay L. Constantini, 92, of Iron Mountain, passed away Wednesday, June 26, 2013, at Manor Care Health Services in Kingsford, where he had been a resident for a year and a half.
Jay was born, August 6, 1920, in Crystal Falls, Mich., son of the late Fred and Helen (Kinsman) Constantini. He grew up in Iron Mountain and was a 1940 graduate of Iron Mountain High School. After high school, Jay worked at VonPlatten Fox Wood Products and the Niagara Paper Mill. In 1942, he was drafted and served in the Coast Guard until 1944. He was stationed in Iceland and was in charge of patrolling the waters. Jay attained the rank of Seaman First Class.
He met his wife, Doris DeMuri, at her father's tavern, the Venetian, on the north side of Iron Mountain. They were married on July 20, 1946, in Iron Mountain, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Jay worked for the Iron Mountain Water Works as a meter reader for 36 years and 8 months, retiring in 1982. Jay was a lifelong resident of Iron Mountain and a parishioner of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.
He was a member of the American Legion Uren-Cooper-Johnson Post No. 50, Iron Mountain, Knights of Columbus Bishop Baraga Post 1585, Iron Mountain-Kingsford United Commercial Travelers, and the Paisano Club. Jay enjoyed watching the Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers, and Chicago Cubs. He watched the Lawrence Welk show every Saturday night and loved to sing and whistle.
Jay is survived by his loving wife of 66 years, Doris (whom he called Dor); his sister-in-law, June Constantini; his two nieces, Debra Constantini (Allen) Steinberg and Paula Wiegele; one nephew, Michael (Jean) Constantini all of Iron Mountain. Also surviving are his great-niece, Briana Wiegele, and great-nephew, Tyler Wiegele, and numerous cousins. Relatives on the DeMuri side include three sisters-in-law and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, Jay was preceded in death by three brothers, William (Bimbo) Constantini, James (Florence) Constantini and his twin brother Fred Constantini.
Visitation will be Monday, July 1, 2013 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at the Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron Mountain. Prayers will be recited Tuesday, 9:30 a.m., at the funeral home. The Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Tuesday, 10:00 a.m., at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Msgr. James Kaczmarek will officiate. Burial will be in Cemetery Park, Iron Mountain. The Uren-Cooper-Johnson American Legion Post No. 50 will accord military honors at graveside.
