Janet Bernice Carpenter, 83, of Kingsford, passed away Friday, September 9, 2011, at Dickinson County Health Care System in Iron Mountain.
She was born on November 10, 1927, in Flint, Mich., daughter of the late Clifford and Bernice (Kimmer) Thorpe.
Janet grew up in the Flint area with her four siblings, Vernon Thorpe, Theda Thorpe, Clarence Thorpe, and Howard Thorpe. She Married George Raymond Carpenter on January 19, 1946, with whom she shared her life for over 64 years until his death on May 18, 2010.
She was a loving wife and mother who always put the best interests and concerns of her family ahead of her own. Over the years, her support and special concern for her grandchildren was instrumental in helping them to accomplish many of their goals.
Janet enjoyed and took pride in the challenge of being able to come up with whatever was needed, whether a needle, an aspirin, or a nail, at a time when it would seem improbable.
She played in the All American Professional Baseball Association in her younger years and remained a loyal Detroit Tigers fan throughout her life. Janet also enjoyed playing cards and doing various crafts, leaving the family with many quilts and sewn items as a remembrance. She will be dearly missed.
Janet is survived by two brothers, Clarence and Howard Thorpe of Lower Michigan; her son, David (Connie) Carpenter of Iron Mountain; her daughter, Sandra (Dan Hayes) of Westland Mich.; and her nephew, Jim Norton, whom she held as dear as her own children. Behrend, and George (Sonali) Behrend, Ken (Melissa) Hayes, Gwen Hayes, Ben (Karen) Hayes, Jennifer Zione, as well as 13 great-grandchildren.
