Obituary

James W. Mitchell, 83, of Kingsford, Mich., passed away Sunday, August 2, 2009, at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans, Marquette, Mich. He was born May 7, 1926, in Iron River, Mich., son of the late Clarence and Evelyn (Peterson) Mitchell. He married Loretta Grant on April 16, 1959. They resided in Iron River. He attended Bates School and Iron River schools. James was a veteran of WWII having served in the United States Army in the Burma/India/China Theater. He also served in the United States National Guard for 25 years. James worked for the State of Michigan as a Produce Inspector for many years before retiring. He was a Life Member of the Ottawa Post No. 3134 Veterans of Foreign Wars, Iron River. He is survived by one son, James (Sharon) Mitchell, Reedsburg, Wis.; three daughters, Charlotte (Joseph) Parrotta, Kingsford, Beverly (Paul McCory) Bjorkman, Shelby Township, Mich., Marilyn Petterson, Iron Mountain; ten grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Waverly (Art) Jarvis, Withee, Wis.; Jeannine (Scottie) Watts, Iron River; nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Lorretta in April 1997; and one brother, Bill Mitchell. Visitation will be Thursday, August 6, 2009, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron Mountain. The funeral service will be Thursday, 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Rev. Douglas Johnson will officiate. Burial will be 11:30 a.m., Friday, August 7, in Rest Haven Cemetery, Iron River. Military rites will be accorded by the Westside Veterans Council. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society.
