Jacob C. "Jake" Neuens, 87, of Aurora, Wis., passed away Thursday, September 25, 2014, at Freeman's Nursing Home, Kingsford, Mich.
He was born March 14, 1927, in Aurora, son of the late Jacob and Flora (DeClark) Neuens. Jacob grew up in Aurora.
He married Darleen DuFresne, September 21, 1946, at American Martyrs Catholic Church, Kingsford. Jacob worked as a driver and a salesman for Fairmont until 1972; he then went to work for the Florence County Sheriff's Department as a deputy sheriff and then sheriff until his retirement in 1986. While working for the Sheriff's Department, Jacob was instrumental in forming the Florence County Search and Rescue Squad.
Jacob enjoyed draft horses, gardening, singing and was a charter member of the Pulling Together Horse Club. He especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. Jake was an active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Aurora and the Iron Mountain-Kingsford Golden K Club.
He is survived by his loving wife of 68 years, Darleen; three sons, Raymond (Kathy) Neuens, Aurora, Ronald (Pam) Neuens, Niagara, Wis. and Thomas Neuens, Kingsford; one honorary son, Charlie (Pat) Galvin, Homestead, Wis.; two daughters, Nancy (Rod) Miller, Fern, Wis. and Lori (Terry) Weinfurter, Aurora; one sister-in-law, Carol Neuens, Aurora; fifteen grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild, many nieces and nephews and special friends Dennis (Marge) Dorn, Aurora.
In addition to his parents, Jacob was preceded in death by five brothers, Clarence, Hank, Pete, Joe and Ed and four sisters, Celia Neuens, Leona Palmcook, Gen Pynenberg and Margaret Heiding.
Visitation will be Monday, September 29, 2014, form 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron Mountain. Prayers will be recited Monday, 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, 11:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Aurora. Rev. Fr. Matt Settle will officiate. Burial will be in Aurora Homestead Cemetery. Jake's four grandsons, Keith Neuens, Eric Miller, Jacob Neuens and Adam Weinfurter will be pallbearers.
The family has chosen the Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron Mountain to honor Jake's Legacy of Life.
