Obituary

Jack R. Jensen, age 90, a longtime manager of the Roseau Wildlife Management Area in northwest Minnesota, died Monday, December 29, 2003, at the VA Hospital in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Jack was born on November 27, 1913, and was one of nine children born to Svend and Christina Jensen of Baudette, Minnesota. In his youth, he participated in a variety of sports: football, hockey, basketball and won a swimming scholarship to the University of Minnesota. Jack was an enthusiastic tenor, played the guitar and harmonica, and loved to dance. It was at a dance that he met his future wife, Edith, and they were later married in Hibbing, Minnesota, on June 3, 1942. During WWII he fought as one of General Patton's soldiers in the Battle of the Bulge, serving as staff sergeant in the 10th Armored Division as a half track driver. At an impending skirmish, Jack had to leave his guitar, was wounded in battle, and was hospitalized for a short time before returning to serve until the war's end. While serving his country, he received numerous awards and decorations for valor and merit including two bronze starts, a bronze metal, and a purple heart. Jensen worked in the Civilian Conservation Corp until becoming a conservation officer and later game manager for the DNR. He played a major role in developing and maintaining one of Minnesota's largest man made game preserves which is visible on the state map as the Roseau River Wildlife Area northwest of Roseau, Minnesota on the Canadian border. Jack left his mark. Since his retirement to Kingsford in 1979, he and his wife Edith continued bonds with family and celebrated a 62nd anniversary. His interests included music, woodworking, gardening, and wildlife relocation. Throughout his life, Jack belonged to a variety of organizations such as the Masons, VFW, American Legion, DAV, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, and the great outdoors. He was an avid sports fan, especially remaining loyal to the Minnesota Vikings. Jack is survived by his wife Edee, his sister, Jean Leach of Wilderville, OR, four children: Dee (Mike) Furfaro of Pinewood, MN, Jack A. (Cher) Jensen of Laurens, SC, Scott (Hanie) Jensen of Minneapolis, MN, and Judith (Robert) Wicklund of Aurora, WI, ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. A private service will be held on Friday and a later veteran's ceremony and burial will follow at Fort Snelling in St. Paul, MN. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jack's name to the DAV.
