Obituary

J. Pearl Johnson, 88, was taken to her heavenly home on Sunday, April 17, 2011, in Amasa. Pearl was born on June 3, 1922, in Amasa, daughter of the late Nick and Marie (Laukkonen) Jarvi. She was a life-long resident of Amasa and graduated from Amasa High School in 1940. She married Wayne L. Johnson at the Sion Lutheran Church in Amasa on June 13, 1964. He preceded her in death on August 29, 1967. She was a life-long member of Sion Lutheran Church and served on the church council for many years. She was the Financial Secretary for many years and was the Church Treasurer for over thirty-five years. Most recently she was serving as the Deputy Financial Secretary. Pearl was also a Sunday School Teacher and a member of Sion Lady's Aid where she served as Treasurer. After graduation, Pearl was hired as Secretary of the Amasa School and worked there until the school closed in 1967. In 1971, she was hired in the bookkeeping department of the First National Bank of Crystal Falls, a position she held until retiring on June 30, 1987. On July 1, 2006, at the Amasa All-Class Reunion, she was honored for her many years of service to the Amasa School as Secretary. She was a member of the Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel. Pearl enjoyed, knitting, crocheting, and working word puzzles. She will be missed by her family and many friends. She is survived by one brother, John (Lucy) Jarvi, Green Bay, Wis.; a special niece, Pamela (Scott) Griffin, Green Bay; special nephews, Jeffrey (Terri) Jarvi, Green Bay, Chad (Theresa) Jarvi, Wanakee, Wis.; cousin, Larry Anderson; great nieces, Kelsey, Morgan, Jordyn; great nephews, Derek, Trent; four sisters-in-law, Viola Manninen, Vienna Forslund, Helen Johnson, Eileen Johnson; many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Visitation will be Wednesday, April 20, 2011, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Sion Lutheran Church, Amasa. Funeral Services will be Wednesday, 11:00 a.m. at Sion Lutheran Church. Rev. Gary Markworth will officiate. Burial will be in Hematite Township Cemetery. Memorials can be made to the Sion Lutheran Church Memorial Fund in Pearl's memory.
