James "Philly" Crispigna, 82, of Iron Mountain, passed away Friday, August 1, 2014, surrounded by his family at the Oscar G. Johnson Veteran's Hospital, Iron Mountain.
He was born January 28, 1932, in Iron Mountain, son of Italian Immigrants, Oreste and Tomaide (Rossi) Crispigna.
Philly was a lifelong resident of Iron Mountain and graduated from Iron Mountain High School, Class of 1950. He excelled in football and track and field, earning a Varsity Letter each of his high school years. Philly served in the United States Navy from 1951, until he was honorably discharged in 1955. He married Lona Markell on July 11, 1953, at the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Iron Mountain. Phil along with his wife was a successful business person as he owned and operated Crispignas Italian Market for over 50 years. His greatest achievement was raising his five daughters.
He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Dickinson Area Paisano Club, a 40 year member of Pine Grove Country Club and the Uren Cooper-Johnson Post No. 50 of the American Legion, Iron Mountain. Phil was motivated by his love for family and interest in athletics which he passed down to his children and grandchildren. Sports were indeed a family affair. He cherished his lifelong friendships that were established over the years. Phil enjoyed spending days at the cottage in Spread Eagle, Wis., visiting with his family and numerous friends.
Philly is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 61 years, Lona; five daughters, Sue Ellen Hosking and their children, Dr. Kate, Erik (Rachel) and Carlyn, Mary Ann (Steve) Flaminio and their children, Kaylie, Sydney and Alexie, Jeanne (Tony) Newberry and their children, Ryan, Samantha, Brittany and Michaela, Patricia (Eric Erickson) Savarin and her children, Lauren, Marco and Michael, and Barbara (Steve Scheibe) Gerhard and her children, Adam, Nathan, Abby and Charlie; one sister-in-law, Bernie Crispigna, Green Bay, Wis.; one great-granddaughter, Gianna; beloved nieces and nephews, extended family and numerous friends.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one son-in-law, Bob Hosking; one brother, Alfred Crispigna and one sister, Kathleen (Earnest "Bugs") Bond.
Visitation will be Thursday, August 7, 2014, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron Mountain. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, August 8, 2014, 9:30 a.m. at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Msgr. Entombment will be in Cemetery Park, Iron Mountain.
