Ida Glazer, 94, of Washington, DC passed away Saturday, November 30, 2013, at Iron County Medical Care Facility, Crystal Falls, after a long full life.
She was born June 11, 1919, in the Bronx, New York City, daughter of the late Sarah and Louis Glazer, who were immigrants from Russia. She attended Central high School in Washington, DC where she studied secretarial skills. She retired from the Government Accountability Office (GAO), after 20 years of service. Prior to that employment, she also worked at the 5 & I Sts. Synagogue and at the Hebrew Academy as a secretary.
Ida married Irwin Schnapper, then a shoe salesman, in 1940. She soon gave birth to a son, Melvin Schnapper. Ida was divorced and moved in with her parents and shared parenting roles of Melvin.
She and Melvin moved into an apartment in Washington, DC where she lived on her own for almost 50 years, except for the occasional visits from Melvin, who lived in Chicago with his wife (LaDena Schnapper aka LaDena Robichaud from Crystal Falls). When she was 90, she moved into Homecrest, a senior living facility in Silver Spring, MD.
Ida was a strong independent woman. Her love of music and dance found her taking the buses and Metro to shows and festivals throughout the Washington, DC metropolitan areas. With her quick wit and sharp senses of humor, she always made people laugh and was liked by everyone. She visited her son and daughter-in-law LaDena Robichaud Schnapper in Chicago and Crystal Falls. She traveled to Disney World and Epcot Center with her grandson, Simeon. She loved making "grandma's special" cream of wheat for her grandson Jonas, when he was little.
After several falls and hospitalizations, she finally moved to the Iron County Medical Care Facility so LaDena and Ida's grandson, Jonas, could become Ida's primary caretakers.
Ida is survived by her son, Mel; ex-Daughter-in-law, LaDena Schnapper; two grandchildren, Jonas and Simeon Schnapper; one brother, Sidney Glazer of Arlington, Va.; a niece Doreen Kreiger, of Gaithersburg, Md.; many other nieces and nephews in Missouri and the children of her deceased brother, Milton Glazer.
In accordance with Ida's wishes, private family services were held.
