Obituary

Dunbar: Hugh Richard Niven, age 88, of Dunbar, Wisconsin died Friday August 13, 2004 at the V. A. Medical Center in Iron Mountain. Hugh was born on February 20, 1916 in Dunbar, Wisconsin son of the late William and Mary (Ovans) Niven. Hugh was a lifelong resident of Dunbar and graduated from Dunbar High School. After completing high school Hugh worked in the C.C.C. in Ashland, Wisconsin until 1941 when he entered the U.S. Army Air Corps, later obtained his pilot's license and was a member of the Civil Air Patrol. Upon returning from the service Hugh married Edna Gassett on December 24, 1943 in Niagara. She preceded him in death on November 7, 2003 in their home after 60years of marriage. Hugh's father William started the dairy farm around 1914 and Hugh along with his brother Donald operated the farm for many years, with Hugh's son Richard later joining them. The farm is still owned and operated by the family. Hugh was an active member of American Legion of Pembine. He served on the Town Board of Dunbar, School Board of Beecher-Dunbar-Pembine as well as many Farm Cooperative Boards. He enjoyed many hobbies including photography, hunting, fishing, gardening, traveling and especially woodworking. Hugh is survived by one son Richard Hugh (Monica) Niven of Iron River, WI, Three daughters, Ann Emanuelson of Dunbar, Nancy Niven of Cedarburg, WI, Jill (Barry) Aiton of Seattle, WA, two brothers, David of Manawa, WI, and Donald of Dunbar, one sister, Dorothy (Stephen) Zovnic of DePere, WI, 12 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Hugh is preceded by his brother Gordon and his sister Marjorie Nerbun. Graveside services with full American Legion Color Guard will be held Saturday August 21, 2004 3:30p.m. at the Dunbar Cemetery. A lite supper will follow at the Dunbar Town Hall. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the American Legion of Pembine, Wisconsin.
