Obituary

Howard J. Demorest, 76, loving and thoughtful husband of Joan, died Tuesday, August 31, 2010, unexpectedly at Marquette General Hospital with his family at his side. He was born in Grand Rapids, Mich. Howard was a long-time resident of Upper Michigan where he lived an active and influential lifestyle. Howard held current licensing as an Insurance Adjuster and Real Estate Broker, D.B.A. Mine Realty. He enjoyed wildlife, hunting, fishing, and was an aviation enthusiast. Howard was a 54-year member No. 8484 of the Elks Lodge, Ishpeming, a life-member of the National Rifle Association (NRA), Michigan Coalition of Responsible Gun Owners (MCRGO), and the North American Hunting Club. Howard was also a member of Ducks Unlimited, Sagola Sportsman's Club, State Employees Retirement Association Chapter 9 & 19, and the American Legion. He graduated from Ionia High School and attended MSU, before enlisting in the United States Air Force where he was a Rescue Flight Technician. Howard was enlisted in the USAF Reserves from 1955 to 1961 when he was honorably discharged. Upon discharge, he was awarded the National Defense Service Medal. Howard was a life-long pilot since his early teens and held ratings for single and multi engine, commercial, instrument, and instructor; he taught his wife, doctor, family, and many others. He had many memorable years on Beaver Island, also flew for Welke Airport. Howard also worked for Kemper Insurance as an Adjuster. Howard retired from the State of Michigan, Lansing- Department of State, District Records and Special Services Division Supervisor for Special Registration, Uniform Commercial Code, Renewal by Mail, International Registration Plan (IRP), and Court Liaison. Surviving are his wife, Joan; son, James Demorest, Indiana; daughter Cynthia (Robert) Titus, Laingsburg, Mich.; four grandchildren, Evan and Robert Demorest, Joshua and Rashel Titus; niece, Judy White; nephew, John VanDrie, and many dear friends. Howard was preceded in death by his parents, Hazel and Harry; brother, Edward; and sister, Yvonne. His wishes were to be cremated with no memorial service.
