We said goodbye to a wonderful man on November 6, 2010, Henry Antonissen of Niagara. At the age of 89 he died peacefully at his home.
Henry was born on December 23, 1920, in Niagara to Henry Sr. and Elizabeth (Brown) Antonissen who carved a farmstead out of the rugged Northern Wisconsin woods. Henry attended Mountain School (one room school up the road from the farm) through the eighth grade. Henry and his nine siblings: Jennie, Julia, Theodore, Joseph, Orpha, Frederick, Susan, Francis and Arthur all helped work the family farm. All except his youngest brother, Arthur preceded him in death along with his grandson, Cody De Pas.
Henry was a lifelong dairy farmer. During WWII, he received a farm deferral to stay and work the farm. His good friend, Walter Holmquist, also had a farm deferral to run the Holmquist farm. Henry married Walter's little sister, S. Jane Holmquist on June 18, 1947. In 2010, they celebrated 63 years of marriage.
Henry served on numerous agricultural organizations including: Farm Service Agency, Farmers Home Administration, Associated Milk Producers (Past Local President), Alfalfaland Select Sires Breeders Cooperative (Past President), and Quad County Equity Livestock Shipping Association (Founding member and Past President).
Henry was an active member of Our Redeemer Lutheran Church where he served as church Elder for many years. His faith was important to him. He led by example.
Henry was a very hard worker. Giving up his car keys at age 86 and retiring from tractor driving at age 87, he continued to ride his lawn tractor to the farm most every day to check on farm operations and lend a hand where he could. He enjoyed gardening, hunting, and especially spending time with his family.
Left to cherish his memory is his wife Jane, two sons: John (Kay) Antonissen, Marinette, Wisconsin, David (Sharon) Antonissen, Niagara, one daughter: Nancy (C. Dwayne) Whitfield, Hobart, Wisconsin. Nine grandchildren: Karen (Paul) Higgs, Kimberly Whitfield, Brenden (Rebecca) Whitfield, Amy, Julia, Casey, Hannah, David Jon Antonissen, Sarah DePas. Four great-grandchildren: Mathew and Mary Helen Higgs, Aubrey and Brinley Whitfield, numerous nieces, nephews, sister-in-laws, and brother-in-laws.
Visitation will be Wednesday, November 10, 2010, from 9:30 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Our Redeemer Lutheran church in Kingsford. Funeral services will be Wednesday 11:00 a.m. at the church. Pastor Chad Ott will officiate. Burial will be in Niagara Cemetery, Niagara.
Memorials, in Henry's memory can be made to the Building Fund at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church.
