Florence- Hazel P. Gehlhoff, age 93, of Florence, Wis., passed away Thursday, February 20, 2019, at Florence Health Services, Florence, Wis.
She was born March 19, 1925, in Florence, daughter of the late Ode and Hazel (Johnson) Christesen. Hazel was a lifelong resident of Florence and graduated from Florence High School, class of 1943. After high school, she moved to Milwaukee where she lived for a short time before returning to Florence. Hazel worked at Swanson Brothers Grocery Store which later became Haberkorns Grocery. She started as a cashier at the grocery store in 1944 and retired in 1987. Hazel married Robert Gehlhoff on September 9, 1946, at St. Johns Evangelical Lutheran Church, Florence. Robert preceded her in death in 1996. Hazel was a very active member of St. Johns Evangelical Lutheran Church. She played the organ for over 47 years and donated numerous hours to the ladies' aid.
Hazel enjoyed crossword puzzles, word search, Saduko and sewing and quilting in her younger years. She will be missed by her church community, her numerous friends, and her family.
Survivors include one son, Robert (Pattie) Gehlhoff, Florence, Wis.; one daughter, Janice Gehlhoff, Florence, Wis.; one sister, Carol (John) Meyer, Iron Mountain, Mich.; two grandchildren, Erica (Shawn) Hallgren, Homestead, Wis. and Ryan Chiamulera, Florence, Wis.; four great-grandchildren, Julia, Emily, Riley and Robyn.
In addition to her parents, and husband, Robert, Hazel was preceded in death by one son, Donald Gehlhoff, 1956; and one brother, Russell Christesen.
Visitation will be Saturday, February 23, 2019, 9:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Florence. Funeral services will be held Saturday, 11:00 a.m., at the church. Rev. Jason Liebenow will officiate. Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery in the Spring.
