Obituary

Harold J. "Smitty" Smith, 87, of Iron Mountain, Mich., passed away Sunday, October 5, 2008, at Dickinson County Memorial Hospital, Iron Mountain. He was born May 14, 1921, in Iron Mountain, son of the late Jacob and Elizabeth Smith. Smitty married the former Eva Nault on November 27, 1943, in Camp Adair, Oregon. Smitty served in the United States Army during World War II, from 1942 until he was honorably discharged in 1946. After military service, he and Eva moved back to Iron Mountain at which time they owned and operated Smitty's Bar in downtown Iron Mountain until 1966. In 1967, they started Smitty's Sporting Goods, which they operated for 15 years. After selling the sport shop, Harold worked for Cable Constructors as a warehouse manager in the KES division for seven years, before retiring. He was a member of St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church, a Disabled American Veterans life member, volunteered as a DAV representative at the Veterans Administration Hospital for 20 years, VFW member, and was also a member of the Iron Mountain-Kingsford Lions Club for 33 years. Smitty was an avid Packers fan. Harold is survived by his wife of 64 years, Eva; two sons, Allen J. (Jeanette) Smith, Gary R. (Joan) Smith; one daughter, Maribeth (Robert) Klopke; five grandchildren, Joel, Kevin, Robin, Brooke, Elizabeth; and two great-grandchildren Paighten, Brandon. He was preceded in death by three sisters, Elizabeth, Verna, and Ethel Mae. Visitation will be Thursday, October 9, 2008, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron Mountain. The Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 23, of Iron Mountain will accord military honors Thursday, 10:45 a.m. at the funeral home. Prayers will be offered Thursday, 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. The Funeral Mass will be celebrated Thursday, 11:30 a.m. at St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church, Iron Mountain. Fr. Raymond Valerio will officiate. Burial will be in Cemetery Park, Iron Mountain.
