Gloria (Furno) Larsen, 90, of Iron Mountain, passed away Wednesday, August 8, 2012, at Dickinson County Health Care System, Iron Mountain. She was born December 29, 1921, in Iron Mountain, daughter of the late Domenic and Mary (Badini) Furno. Gloria was one of six children. She grew up on the north side of Iron Mountain and graduated from Iron Mountain High School, Class of 1940. During WWII, Gloria worked for the War Board in Chicago, Ill. She later worked as a long-distance telephone operator in Racine, Wis., and then for Michigan Bell in Iron Mountain. On January 20, 1968, she married the love of her life, Dale M. Larsen in Oconto, Wis. His devotion to her, especially in the last ten years of her life, is nothing less than awe-inspiring. Together, they were able to winter in Reno, Nev., and later Ocean Springs, Miss. They also traveled to such diverse places as Washington, D.C., New Mexico, and California, to name a few. In her younger days, Gloria was well known for her cooking and baking skills. She taught her daughter, Linda, the art of making ravioli and other Italian delights. Gloria also enjoyed card games such as Canasta and Poker. In her later years, the insidious thief 'macular degeneration' stole from her many of the things she delighted in such as reading, cooking, and doing crossword puzzles. She still was able to enjoy trips to the Carter Casino, talking on the telephone to long-distance friends, and visiting people in her home. Gloria was an immaculate housekeeper, which she still took great pride in with the help of her dedicated husband, Dale. She was a loving wife, mother, mother-in-law, sister, sister-in-law, aunt, grandma, and great-grandma and will be missed to the highest degree by all who knew her. Gloria is survived by her loving husband of 44 years, Dale and his daughter Lynn A. Cartier, Seymour, Wis. She is further survived by Lynn's daughters, Donna, Kirsten, Megan, and Marcie. Gloria's passing is also being mourned by her devoted daughter, Linda (Joe) Tripp, Pembine and Joe's children, Cindy, Suzanne, Bonnie, Sally, Joe, and Marijane. Numerous great-grandchildren are now without "Grammie Glor" also. She is further survived by three brothers, Louis Furno, Donald (Pat) Furno, and Ray (Janet) Furno. Additionally, Gloria is survived by special nieces and nephews including Jim (Jane) Heisenfeldt, Marcia (Frank) Cook, Ken (Arlo) Heisenfeldt, Mike (Debra) Furno, and Mary (John) Brooks. Gloria is also lovingly remembered by very special friends Ricky and Cindy Hagler, Mississippi. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by one brother, Claude Furno, special sister and best friend for life, Josephine Heisenfeldt, brother-in-law, Charlie Heisenfeldt, sister-in-law, Anita Furno, and son-in-law, Joel Cartier. The visitation will be Monday, August 13, 2012, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron Mountain. The memorial service will be held 12:30 p.m., Monday at the funeral home. Rev. Joseph Gouin will officiate. Burial will be in Niagara Cemetery.
