Gladys Mildred Hanttula, of Amasa, Mich., passed away peacefully and went home to her Lord and Savior at age 90 on June 4, 2022, at the Iron River Care Center, surrounded by her loving family. She was able to celebrate at her 90th birthday party with family and friends and her favorite foods. She very much enjoyed a good party!
She was born on May 23, 1932, in Amasa, Mich., to Eric and Ellen (Isaacson) Jacobson. Gladys graduated from Amasa High School in 1950. She married Victor Hanttula on January 10, 1953, in Crystal Falls, Mich. He preceded her in death on May 8, 2009.
She raised six children and is survived by two sons, Gary Hanttula and Kevin (Mary) Hanttula, both currently of Crystal Falls, Mich.; two daughters, Denise (Fred) Hiltonen, and Coleen (Phillip) Blough, both of Amasa, Mich. Her memories they will cherish! She has eight grandchildren, Jerry (Danette) Hanttula, Kim Hanttula, Rick (Tanya) Hiltonen, Lindsey (Shawno) Lauridsen, Ashley (Jess) Bortolini, Jenna (Nick) Simbob, Logan, and Savannah Blough; fourteen great-grandchildren, Syriana, Kaarina, Lincoln, Aishwarya, Indio, Lily, Marshall, Claire, Brooke, Ava, Myra, Wes, Maradee and Vivian. She was fondly called GG by all of them! She was a very big part of her grandchildren's lives, and they will miss her dearly, many visits and phone calls, and stories shared with them over the years. She even had the pleasure to be the Maid of Honor in her granddaughter Lindsey's wedding! She got to live for several years with her youngest daughter and the grandchildren Logan and Savannah. She leaves them with many memories and her sense of humor!
She is also survived by many nephews and nieces, some who she helped raise for a short time and were dear to her heart, Albert (Diane), who has been very close to her; David, Ronald, and Thomas Jacobson; daughter-in-laws, Dawn Hanttula and Rosalie Taucher; sister-in-law, Sue Jacobson; other daughter, Kay Jacobson; great-niece, Rayven Jacobson; and closest friends, Aila Maki and Nancy Trewartha.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Victor; two sons, Donald (Frog) and Byron Hanttula; and four brothers, Robert, Glenford, John, and Albert Jacobson.
She leaves behind many close and dear friends that she loved dearly, many that helped her along the way!
She worked for many years as a home health nurse aide for several facilities showing her constant passion to help people.
Gladys was a member of the Sion Lutheran and later the Bethany Lutheran church of Amasa, Mich., where she lovingly taught Sunday school and vacation bible school for many years; she was very involved in her church. She helped start the Amasa Community Choir and had a passion for singing and playing the organ! She served as Lutheran Brotherhood (Thrivent) Chapter President for 23 years and Vice President for eight years. Gladys had been a life member of the VFW Auxiliary Tufts/Rondon Post 2891. She also volunteered and was very involved with the Mission Bible training center for many years upon its opening. She spearheaded many projects in Dickinson and Iron counties as well as northern Wisconsin. Gladys designed the Amasa 1991 centennial quilt, which was another passion of hers, quilting and sewing! She was a 4H and Cub Scout leader. She also had a passion for cooking and baking, and there was ALWAYS coffee and some kind of baked goods she made, ready for anyone who stopped by, which family and friends did very often! She passed on her yummy pasty recipe to her daughters and granddaughters, who all boast they are the best pasty around and had fun times with her making batches of them and her cardamom biscuit was another favorite, along with many other favorites!
Visitation will take place Saturday, July 23, 2022, from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. at Bethany Lutheran Church, Amasa, Mich., A celebration of Gladys' life, will follow at 11:00 a.m. Pastor DJ Rasner will officiate. Burial will take place in Hematite Cemetery, Amasa.
