Obituary

Gertrude Lutz (nee MacDonald), 90, Iron Mountain, Mich., passed away Friday, April 11, 2008, at Pinecrest Medical Care Facility, Powers, Mich. She was born December 17, 1917, in White Pine, Mich., daughter of the late Archie and Lorretta (Diedrick) MacDonald. Gertrude graduated from Ontonagon High School, class of 1933, at age 15. Upon completion of high school she went on to obtain her teaching certificate from Ontonagon County Normal. She then went to Detroit, Mich. where she graduated from Detroit Business College with a degree in accounting. Returning to Ontonagon she worked at the hospital for two years before traveling to Minnesota and graduating with a degree in Medical and X-ray Technology from Northwest Institute of Medical Technology. She moved to Two Rivers, Wisconsin, where she began work at the Two Rivers Hospital. On May 20, 1943, she married William J. Lutz and resided in Manitowoc, Wisconsin for thirty-six years. He preceded her in death in 1977. She was a member of St. Andrew Catholic Church Parish, National Circle Daughters of Isabella, Fraternal Order of Eagles and the Lady Elks Club. She was a Den Mother and Girl Scout Leader for many years. Later she went on to become a bookkeeper at Stangel's Super Value for 15 years and became a member of the Retail Clerks Association. In 1984 she moved to Iron Mountain to be near her son and daughter and their families. Gertrude became part of the office staff at The Advertiser where she worked for many years. She was a member of The Royal Neighbors Club, the Iron Mountain Senior Center, and St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church Parish. Her hobbies included fishing, knitting and reading. Survivors include, one son, John (Marilyn) Lutz, Spread Eagle, Wis., one daughter, Linda (Curtis) Johnson-Gay, Florence, Wis.; grandchildren, Steven Johnson, David Johnson, Michael (Nicole) Lutz, Lisa (Mark) Hirth, Matthew (fiance' Stacy Olson) Lutz; great-grandchildren, Taylor, Ansley, Finnley and Cayden; one sister-in-law, Elaine (Timm) Morrell and a nephew, Robert Timm Jr. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and one brother, Jack MacDonald. Friends may call Wednesday, April 16, 2008, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at St. Mary and St. Joseph Catholic Church, Iron Mountain. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated 6:00 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Rev. Daniel S. Zaloga will officiate. Following services a luncheon will be served at the church.
