Gerald N. Hegstrom, 80, of Crystal Falls, Mich., passed away Thursday, August 5, 2010, at Northstar Health Systems, Iron River, Mich.
He was born July 18, 1930, in Crystal Falls, son of the late Leonard and Mamie (Mannisto) Hegstrom. Jerry graduated from Crystal Falls High School, Class of 1948, and was a life-long resident of Crystal Falls. He married the former Marian Sloat on December 24, 1949, in Iron River; she preceded him in death on June 20, 2005.
Jerry was employed by the Tobin Mine until 1960, when he went to work for M.A. Hanna Mining Companies at the Groveland Mine for 21 years, until its shutdown in 1981. He served as Iron County Commissioner for many years and also served as chairman of the Dickinson-Iron District Board of Health. Jerry also served on the Crystal Falls Fire Department for 29 years, from 1965 until 1994.
He enjoyed traveling, hunting, fishing, and being in the outdoors. Jerry especially enjoyed being with friends for camp night. He was a member of Christ United Methodist Church, Crystal Falls, where he served as treasurer and was a member of the Men's Fellowship. Jerry also enjoyed making the coffee each Sunday before church.
Jerry was a husband, father, and friend, who was always there to help a neighbor in need.
He is survived by two daughters, Susan (James) Stoor, Surprise, Ariz., Ruth Ann Palm, Crystal Falls; one son, Artie Hegstrom, Inkster, N.D.; eight grandchildren, Michael (Joye) Stoor, Amy (Larry) Adler, Brian Stoor, Jerry (Janessa) Hegstrom, Eric Hegstrom, Shannon (Trevor) Uhlir, Travis Palm, Corey Palm; three great-grandchildren, Micah Stoor, Isaac Stoor, Adam Stoor; one brother, Lawrence Hegstrom; and one brother-in-law, Lloyd (Mae) Sloat, Ontonagon, Mich.
Jerry was preceded in death by one son, Mark Alan Hegstrom; and one brother, Leonard "Sonny" Hegstrom.
Visitation will be Tuesday, August 10, 2010, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Christ United Methodist Church. The memorial service will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, at the church. Rev. Stephen Rhoades will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Memorial Cemetery, Crystal Falls.
There will be a Crystal Falls Fire Department Pass-in-Review 10:45 a.m. Tuesday, at church.
