George Mattson, 93, of Crystal Falls, passed away Monday, August 13, 2012, at Northstar Health System hospital, Iron River. He was born October 16, 1918, in Canada son of the late Samuel and Sofia (Liikala) Matson. On February 22, 1947, in Port Arthur (Thunder Bay), Ontario, Canada, he married Louise 'Lucy' Cimprich. She preceded him in death on September 27, 2008. George attended school in Canada and fought with the allied forces in World War II with the Canadian Army. In 1950 he and Lucy moved to Crystal Falls and George became an iron ore miner and worked for the Bristol and Sherwood mines. He enjoyed going to camp, hunting and spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren. Survivors include, one son, Robert (Dawn) Mattson, Ettrick, Wis., one daughter Patricia (Gordon) Marcinak, Crystal Falls; three grandchildren, Tracy (Pete), Kari (Mike), Eric; and five great-grandchildren, Jacob, Toni, John, Cassidy and Madeline. Besides his parents and wife, George was preceded in death by one sister, Sylvia, and five brothers, Jalmar, Werner, Samuel, Dave, and Waino. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Thursday, August 16, 2012, at United Lutheran Church, Crystal Falls. Rev. Micheal Laakko will officiate. Burial will be in the Evergreen Memorial Cemetery, Crystal Falls.
