George Samuel Hronkin, passed away peacefully in his home with his children by his side, Sunday, March 4, 2012.
George was born on August 28, 1914, and lived his 97 years well. He was born in Ironwood, Michigan and was raised in Crystal Falls. He loved playing his harmonica and singing Slovak songs. George joined the CCC s and planted trees. Later, he did body and fender work in Hancock. Moving to Indiana to work in the steel mills led him to his wife, Anna Marcinov Hronkin. They moved back to Crystal Falls, and George began work with the Iron County Road Commission as a carpenter and snow plow driver.
He was an avid outdoorsman and cross country skied into his 90's. His humor made him a great storyteller. He harvested wild mushrooms, pine cones, blueberries, sugar plums and cranberries. He always kept a garden and enjoyed watching things grow. He crafted willow furniture and built his own home.
George spent wonderful hours at his Kelso Camp with friends and family and shared his advice for living a full life: "Eat well, sleep well and take your vitamins!"
