Iron Mountain:
George Charles Harvey passed away Sunday, February 5, 2006. He was 85 years old. He was born August 28, 1920 in Iron Mountain, MI.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Europe and was part of the D-Day invasion. After the war, he remained in Europe as a petroleum specialist. During this time, he was in a highly publicized plane crash. The crash was the first on a glacier with no casualties. It was covered in Life Magazine, Readers Digest, news reel shorts and a book entitled, Twelve Walked Away. As the only passenger with medical training, he was a hero for treating the injured passengers. He graduated from Michigan State University and received his Masters Degree from UNLV. He worked as a special education teacher and a vocational counselor for CCSD. He was a director in the Foster Grandparent Program for CCSD and received recognition from President Reagan for this work. He also served as a tutor for St. Jude's Ranch for Children in Boulder City. George is survived by his children, Lynn Orphan of Reno, Edward of Fairfield, Iowa, Dawnine (Roger) Hillman of Las Vegas and Charles (Lesley) of Boulder City.
He is also survived by ex-wife Gladys Harvey, the mother of his children, and his sisters, Ione Harvey of Kingsford, MI and Cynthia Fugere of Iron Mountain, MI and his grandchildren Katie & Lizzie Orphan, Joe & Cameron Harvey, Rhonda Rigby, Slade Hillman, and Tyler & Ryan Harvey.
The family is very grateful to Willow Creek Memory Care for making his final years pleasant and comfortable and to Creekside Hospice for making his final days peaceful.
