Obituary

George Raymond Carpenter, 84, of Kingsford, Mich., formerly of Hale, Mich., passed away Tuesday, May 18, 2010, at home surrounded by his loving family after a lengthy illness. He was born August 12, 1925, in West Branch, Mich., son of the late Raymond and Ruth (McCann) Carpenter. On September 7, 1943, George enlisted in the United States Marine Corps and served his country during WWII in the South Pacific. During the Saipan Campaign, George was injured but later returned to duty with the occupational forces in Hiroshima. He was honorably discharged on January 8, 1946. On January 19, 1946, George married the former Janet Bernice Thorpe in Flint, Michigan. They resided in Flint for 21 years before moving to Harrisville, Mich. for one year and then to Hale, where they resided until moving to Kingsford in April, 2008. George worked for General Motors for two years before going to work for Consumer Power Company as a lineman. He retired from Consumer Power Company in August, 1980, after 32 years of service. During his 30 years of retirement, George and Janet enjoyed traveling, visiting their daughter in Hawaii and the Arizona WWII Memorial at Pearl Harbor, cruising the Caribbean, hunting in Alaska, visiting his sister and hunting in Idaho and Arizona, visiting his grandson and great-grandchildren in California, and visiting his grandchildren and great-grandchildren throughout Michigan. George was an avid outdoorsman and especially enjoyed spending time in the woods during Fall. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Janet Carpenter; his son, David (Connie) Carpenter, Iron Mountain; his daughter, Sandy (Dan) Hayes, Westland, Mich.; nine grandchildren, Terry (Andrea) Behrend, San Diego, Calif., George (Sonali) Behrend, Canton, Mich., Dan Carpenter, David (Valerie) Carpenter, both of Iron Mountain, Katie (Tim) Stenstrom, Oshkosh, Wis., Gwen Hayes, Mt. Pleasant, Mich., Ken (Melissa) Hayes, West Branch, Ben (Karen), Hale, Jenny Ziane, Grapevine, Tex.; 12 great-grandchildren, Jack, Jason, Maya, Monica, and Kavin Behrend, Jake (Michelle Moraska), Ashlee, Andrew, and Derek Carpenter, Wren and Robyn Hayes, AK Ziane; one brother, Paul Carpenter; one sister, Dorothy Nichols; many nieces and nephews. George was preceded in death by an infant son, Raymond Daniel Carpenter and a sister, Ruby Nichols. Visitation will be Thursday, May 20, 2010, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Friday, May 21, 2010, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Jacobs Funeral Home, Iron Mountain. American Legion Uren-Cooper- Johnson Post No. 50, Iron Mountain, will accord military honors 10:45 a.m. Friday, at the funeral home. The funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, at the funeral home.
